It’s still not clear whether it is a cause, an early warning sign of trouble brewing, or a consequence of disease, but some researchers believe that the brain’s memory centres may depend on olfactory stimulation to stay healthy. For instance, covid-19 and other respiratory infections that disrupt smell have been linked with an increased risk of memory decline in older adults. ⁠
