𝙱𝙻𝙸𝚂𝚂 𝚂𝙴𝚀𝚄𝙴𝙽𝙲𝙴 〰️ Originally released in 1984, Structures From Silence is Steve Roach’s () first dip into the waters of pure synth ambiance. It’s a breakthrough. A vision.

From the opening textures of “Reflections in Suspension” to the celestial cloud drift of the title track, the entire album is transportive. An Oberheim synth, a Lexicon reverb, recorded direct to tape, and BOOM – the gentlest, most heartfelt synthesis of European art music and razor’s edge American technology. Where Kubrick envisioned an infinite plane of geometric apparitions, Roach burnished the edges into a soft wave of infinite, amorphic possibilities. Close your eyes, and it’ll last forever.

With this playlist, inspired by Hassell and Steve Roach () among others, we venture off into the “unknown and imaginary regions” conjured by artists loosely categorizable as Fourth World. If Hassell’s initial label feels dated now, the sound itself was ahead of its time, or maybe out of it altogether.

Fourth World music summons mythic landscapes, an invitation into new textures, sounds, cosmologies. Our playlist interprets the term broadly: French-Beninese synth wizard Wally Badarou, Roberto Musci’s searching folk collage, and contemporary cousins like Carmen Villain.

Steve Roach joins us in Los Angeles on Saturday, June 6 for a 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 into light, sound and space. For now, a few more worlds here to get lost in.

Miller’s first record as Resavoir, released by International Anthem () in 2019, became a favorite across scenes and subgenres, a richly textured, resplendent blend of ambient and soul-jazz. As a trusted session player for everyone from SZA to Whitney, Miller found a space all his own, collaging layer after layer of lush string arrangements, subtle electronics, and his own swirling, Hassell-esque melodies on trumpet guiding the way.

In Detroit, Miller and friends reinterpret songs from his new album Themes For Dreams, with an opening set of dreamy guitar from Uhlmann and a light show projection-mapped to the walls of this history cathedral. Limited early bird tickets on sale now in our bio.

From the opening lope of “Your Only Life,” ’s new LP Paris in the Spring gives you the impression its creator is still figuring things out. On its surface, the album has a silky shimmer to it. Underneath, it’s searching, making sense of midlife, motivation, heartache, hope.

The .chip co-founder enlists collaborators who operate in a similar register (Nicolas Godin of 𝗔𝗜𝗥, 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗦, Green Gartside of 𝗦𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗧𝗜 𝗣𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗧𝗜) and channels an eclectic mix of spiritual forebears. Country ballads, soft-focus disco, Sly Stone’s Rhythm King rumination, David Lynch — there’s even a “Wild Horses” cover. In Taylor’s hands — and through his voice — it all flows into something tender and transcendent.

This week, we host Alexis for two shows, in Chicago and San Francisco. He’ll map the album’s gorgeous, glowing palette into a solo ambient exploration, all paired with projection-mapped visuals.
