At 63, I’ve learned that weight loss after 45 isn’t just about calories anymore—it’s about hormones.

Many women discover that the foods they could eat in their 20s and 30s no longer work the same way. Processed foods, refined carbohydrates, sugary treats, and regular alcohol intake can make it easier to store body fat, especially around the midsection.

As estrogen changes and metabolism shifts, our bodies become less forgiving. This doesn’t mean weight loss is impossible—it simply means we need a different approach.

Another hormone to pay attention to is cortisol. Cortisol naturally rises in the morning and helps wake us up and get us moving. Think of it as the hormone that helped our ancestors escape danger and survive.

Today, many of us wake up, drink our coffee, and then spend the next few hours sitting in the car or at a desk. Our bodies are getting the signal to move, but we’re staying still.

One of the best things you can do is add some movement to your morning. A workout is great, but even a brisk walk can help. Morning movement supports blood sugar balance, improves energy, lowers stress, and may help with the stubborn belly fat that so many women struggle with after 45.

Instead of focusing only on counting calories, focus on managing your hormones by building meals around whole, minimally processed foods, prioritizing protein and fiber, and making daily movement a priority.

Have you noticed that the foods and habits that worked for you 20 years ago don’t work the same way today? 🌱

30 grams of protein to start my day. šŸŒ±šŸ“

I made a bowl of tofu yogurt and topped it with berries, flax, and cacao nibs. 🫐✨

I’ve noticed that when I start my day with protein, I feel full, energized, and ready to head outside and work on the farm. šŸšœā˜€ļøšŸ“

Twenty years ago, I thought health was something I could earn.

I’d have a night out, eat whatever I wanted, wake up feeling sluggish, and then try to make up for it with a hard workout. The cycle was always the same: overdo it, feel guilty, push harder.

At 63, I’ve learned a different way.

I don’t exercise to punish myself.
I don’t spend my weekends recovering from my choices.
I don’t chase health through extremes.

Instead, I focus on the things that help me feel good every day: nourishing plant-based foods, time with my trainer, practicing yoga, journaling, walks with my dogs, time outdoors, and prioritizing sleep.

What I’ve learned is that health isn’t built in one workout or one perfect meal.

It’s built in the small habits you practice over and over again.

And honestly, this version feels a whole lot better.

I have more energy, sleep better, feel stronger, and enjoy life more today than I did back then.

It’s not a diet. It’s not a challenge. It’s a lifestyle I’ve created that helps me feel healthy, strong, and at peace in my own skin. ā¤ļø

One of my favorite high-protein snacks! šŸ’š

Hot or cold, I love edamame. It’s one of my favorite hand-to-mouth snacks when I need something satisfying.

When everyone else is reaching for chips or snack cakes, I have edamame to the rescue. 😊

Packed with plant protein, fiber, and staying power, it’s an easy snack to keep in the freezer and grab when hunger strikes.

Do you eat edamame? šŸŒ±šŸ’š

Many women come to me focused on weight loss.
What they often discover is that better sleep, more energy, stronger muscles, and improved blood sugar are just as life-changing.

For years, I thought helping women eat healthier was about giving them more nutrition information.

What I’ve learned is that most women already know what to do.

What they need is a simple plan, accountability, and support when life gets busy.

The women I work with aren’t looking for another diet.

They want to feel comfortable in their bodies, have steady energy, build strength as they age, and stop thinking about food all day.

That’s the work I love.

One thing I’ve learned after 30 years as a dietitian is that health isn’t something we achieve.

It’s something we practice.

It’s choosing nourishing foods most of the time.
Moving our bodies regularly.
Spending time outdoors.
Building strength.
Getting enough rest.
And continuing to care for ourselves as we age.

The goal isn’t just to lose weight.

The goal is to stay strong, energetic, capable, and independent for as long as possible.

That’s the journey I’m on, and it’s the journey I help my clients navigate as well.

If you’d like to learn more about working together, send me a message with the word HEALTH. I’d love to hear what’s going on and see if I can help.

Honestly, it doesn’t look like much now that it’s done… but I can assure you my body has receipts. 😊

Yesterday I hauled this cute little cedar planter home from Brick House Artisans in Leslie, carried three bags of soil from the trunk, planted flowers, and made countless trips back and forth across the deck.

A good reminder that fitness isn’t just about workouts. It’s about staying strong enough to do the things we love.

Gardening may not look like exercise, but movement is movement. šŸŒæšŸ’œšŸ’š

I don’t eat dairy yogurt, and most plant-based yogurts are surprisingly low in protein.

So I make my own.

This bowl starts with tofu-based yogurt, which provides about twice the protein of many store-bought plant yogurts. I simply blend a block of organic firm tofu with about 1/3 cup unsweetened soy milk and a squeeze of lemon for a little tang. Sometimes I’ll add 1/3 of a frozen banana for natural sweetness.

Then I top it with raspberries, flax seeds, and cacao nibs for fiber, omega-3 fats, and a little crunch.

One of the biggest nutrition lessons I teach women is that feeling satisfied matters. When meals contain enough protein and fiber, healthy eating becomes a lot easier.
