Hi, I’m Michelle. I’m a certified personal trainer and yoga teacher in Los Angeles. Oh yeah, and I’m fat.

I’ve been raging against diet culture for years. I’ve been the same places you’ve been: in and out of diet and exercise programs to make myself smaller, only to fail to meet an impossible standard.

And then I started lifting. Picking up heavy things made me realize how CAPABLE and STRONG I am, how exercise could be enjoyable even though it’s challenging, and all of it had nothing to do with the size of my waist or a number on the scale.

I created Fat B Fitness for the person scared to go to the gym for being judged, for the person stuck on the elliptical wondering why they can’t lose weight, for the person who wants to move their body but doesn’t know where to start.

I’m your cool older sister at the gym. I’m here to show you there’s a better way to move your body and it starts with SELF LOVE and the knowledge that diet culture was never your friend.

I train in-person in Culver City and online. I’ll be posting fat-positive resources, non weight- loss exercise tips, and stories about my personal journey with strength training.

DM me with questions about how to start your body positive lifting journey!

What do self love and fitness have to do with one another?

A lot more than you think.

I can’t speak to everyone’s experience, but most people generally start a fitness program in order to meet an external, appearance-related goal.

“I want my _____ to look like____” or “I want to lose (x) pounds.”

But why? I asked myself the same line of questions every time I have the desire to try to lose weight (living in a fatphobic world it comes up a lot). What I came up with was “I want to lose weight so other people will treat me better.”

That statement sat with me, and I’ll do a whole ‘nother post about society’s expectations of bodies later. But it seemed to me like I was wanting to lose weight so someone else could give me something I was lacking—love for myself.

Was losing weight going to automatically make me engage in ? No. Because that would mean my love for myself was conditional to how much I weigh.

I would never, ever make loving another person conditional on their appearance. To make that love conditional for myself is playing into a double standard that hurts me the most.

What if instead of seeking to change myself for the approval of others, I started with loving myself, and moving from that place? How would I engage with exercise and my body differently?

Your body is the vessel that holds you through life. It is perfect, as it is, right now.

I’ll say that again. Your body is perfect right now. Not “X amount of pounds from now” or anything else tied to an impossible beauty standard.

There has to be more to life than paying bills and making ourselves smaller.

What if we moved in ways that are joyful, engaging, and life-giving?
🌟
What if we started doing the things we’ve always dreamed about NOW?

Your body is your vessel for this life. I’m here to help you embrace it with curiosity and compassion. Let’s dream beyond smaller numbers on the scale.

🖼️ body image re-frame 💖

I took this photo at a friend’s wedding this past weekend. I felt 🔥hot in my dress and was feeling myself.

THEN…
I went to post the photo and felt self-conscious about the shape of my tummy. I didn’t post.
BUT…
I gave myself some space and thought about what I would say to a friend:

✨tummies are adorable and don’t have to be flat
🪞how you look has NOTHING to do with your self-worth
👁️‍🗨️that self critical voice comes from , not from my true self

and does NOT mean you never have moments of doubt. It means that you tease apart where those messages are coming from and if they serve you.
