Meet 2026 scholar, Samad Acklin! 🩺✨

For Samad, the path to medicine was shaped by the power of being seen, understood and cared for by physicians who shared his identity.

Born and raised in Compton, Samad earned his bachelor’s degree in neuroscience and global health from Northwestern University before completing a postbaccalaureate program at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, where he graduated with highest honors.

His own experiences as a patient inspired his commitment to becoming a physician. Receiving care from doctors who made him feel seen and valued showed Samad how meaningful representation can be in building trust and delivering compassionate care. Today, he hopes to help ensure more patients have access to equitable care while inspiring the next generation of Black students to see themselves as future health care leaders.

Now, as a student at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Samad is one of eight 2026 scholars awarded a full medical school scholarship through L.A. Care.

As healthcare workforce shortages continue to grow across Los Angeles County, Samad’s journey reflects why investing in a diverse, community-rooted physician workforce matters. Through its $255 million Elevating the Safety Net initiative, L.A. Care is helping remove financial barriers to medical education and support future physicians who can bring both clinical expertise and lived experience to the communities they serve.

Samad’s story is a reminder that representation can do more than shape a patient’s experience. It can inspire the next generation to imagine themselves in medicine, strengthen trust in care and help build a more equitable future for communities across Los Angeles County. 💙

Meet 2026 scholar, Eimar Ixtlilco! 🩺✨

For Eimar, the path to medicine has always been rooted in family, perseverance and service. 🩺✨

A first-generation college graduate from Compton, Eimar faced a defining moment during his junior year when his father lost his job. Determined to help support his family, he accelerated his studies, graduated from UCLA a year early with a degree in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology, and earned Dean’s List honors along the way.

His commitment to community extends far beyond the classroom. For years, Eimar has volunteered with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, giving back to a program that once supported his own family during a difficult time.

Now, as a student at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Eimar is one of eight 2026 scholars awarded a full medical school scholarship through L.A. Care.

As healthcare workforce shortages continue to grow across Los Angeles County, Eimar’s journey reflects why investing in the next generation of community-rooted physicians matters. Through its $255 million Elevating the Safety Net initiative, L.A. Keep Your Medi-Cal, No Matter Your Immigration Status

As of January 1, 2026, some adults will no longer be able to sign up for full-scope Medi-Cal coverage based on their immigration status. If you already have Medi-Cal, you can keep your full-scope Medi-Cal coverage, but you must submit your renewal on time every year and continue to meet Medi-Cal rules, like income requirements and living in California.

Meet 2026 scholarship recipient, Lorena Gonzalez. 🩺✨

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Lorena’s journey to medicine was shaped by her own experiences navigating chronic illness, gaps in insurance coverage and financial challenges. Those experiences strengthened her resilience and inspired her commitment to creating a health care system that is more compassionate, accessible and responsive to the communities it serves.

Now attending the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Lorena hopes to combine clinical medicine with digital health, education and policy to address social determinants of health and improve access to care for underserved communities.

Each year, L.A. Care’s *Elevating the Safety Net* Scholarship Program provides eight aspiring physicians with full medical school scholarships. By reducing the burden of medical school debt, the program gives community-minded physicians greater freedom to pursue careers serving low-income and medically underserved communities rather than allowing financial pressures to shape where they practice.

For Lorena, that means staying focused on her goal of caring for patients during their most vulnerable moments while helping shape a health care system that better serves communities across Los Angeles County. 💙

Congratulations to our CEO, Martha Santana-Chin, for being honored at Supervisor Hilda L. Solis’ Hispanic Heritage Month Reception!

Martha was recognized recently along with 11 other First District leaders for her work leading L.A. Care — the largest publicly operated health plan in the nation, serving more than 2 million Medi-Cal members across Los Angeles County. Supervisor Solis praised her proactive approach to leadership, and her commitment to fighting for the communities L.A. Care serves.
