A new school year can bring excitement, but it can also highlight areas where a child may need a little extra support. 📚

Every child learns differently, and struggling in one area doesn’t define their ability to learn or succeed.

With the right support and strategies, children can build confidence, develop new skills, and feel more successful in the classroom. ❤️

Back-to-school preparation often means new shoes, backpacks, school supplies, and routines, but there’s another important skill to prepare for: communication. 🎒

At school, children need to ask for help, express their needs, interact with peers, and speak up when they don’t understand.
“Can you help me?”
“I need a break.”
“Can you say that again?”

These may seem like simple phrases, but they can make a BIG difference in a child’s ability to participate and feel confident at school.

Functional communication looks different for every child. It may include spoken language, gestures, visuals, signs, AAC, or another communication system.

The goal isn’t simply to get children talking, it’s to help them communicate what they need, when they need it. ❤️

Here are a few communication milestones to keep in mind:
🚩 By 18 months:
The CDC expects children to try to say at least 3 words besides “mama” or “dada.” Approximations count, words don’t have to sound perfect!

🚩 By 24 months:
Children typically begin using about 50 words and putting two or more words together, such as “more milk” or “go outside.”
And it’s important to remember: communication is about more than counting words.

At any age, we also want to consider whether your child:
• Understands what others are saying
• Uses gestures like pointing, waving, or showing
• Communicates wants and needs
• Engages socially with others
• Is learning and gaining new communication skills over time

If something doesn’t feel right to you, you don’t have to wait until your child “outgrows it” to ask questions.

A speech-language evaluation can help you understand where your child is in their communication development and whether additional support may be helpful.

Not every student learns the same way
and that’s okay.

Sometimes a child with ADHD or another learning difference is judged by what others can see: the fidgeting, the unfinished notes, the wandering attention. But those visible challenges don’t tell the whole story.

Many students who learn differently are incredibly bright, creative, curious, and capable. What they often need isn’t lower expectations, they need the right support, strategies, and environment to help their strengths shine.

At BB, we believe every child deserves to be seen beyond their challenges. We celebrate their unique ways of thinking, build on their strengths, and provide the tools they need to grow with confidence.

Because learning differently never means thinking less. 💙
