Not all feeding patterns are “mature” right away, and some children continue using a sucking pattern when learning to eat from a spoon.

Here are some signs you might notice 👇

▪️Your child is sucking food off the spoon instead of removing it with lips and a steady tongue
▪️Food is being pulled straight back instead of being controlled in the mouth
▪️You see the tongue thrusting back and forth between or past the lips
▪️Food is “smooshed” against the palate rather than “chewed” along the gum line
▪️Frequent loss of food or excessive residue after swallowing

Why this matters 🧠Feeding is a full-body skill. When oral-motor coordination, posture, or core stability are still developing, children may rely on earlier reflexive patterns like sucking instead of more mature, coordinated eating.

What can help 💪With appropriate feeding therapy support, children can build stronger oral motor skills, improve coordination, and develop safer, more efficient feeding patterns over time.

May is Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) Awareness Month 💙 a time to increase understanding of feeding challenges and support families navigating them.

Most parents don’t realize this… but how you pronounce letter sounds can impact how easily your child learns to read.

Adding extra sounds like “buh” or “tuh” can make blending words confusing for early learners.
In our Confident First Day of Kindergarten Camp, we focus on:
✔️ Correct phonics foundations✔️ Early reading readiness✔️ Building confidence with learning

Because small habits now = BIG success later.

✨ Want your child to feel confident walking into kindergarten?

Through our Core Learning Skills Training program, we assess each child to see which primitive reflexes may still be retained (meaning they haven’t fully integrated or “gone away” when they should have). From there, we create a customized plan to help the nervous system mature so learning can become easier and more natural.
In this video, we’re demonstrating the Moro (startle) reflex.

The Moro reflex is an early survival reflex present at birth, designed to help infants respond to sudden changes in their environment (like loud sounds or loss of support). It should naturally integrate within the first few months of life. When it remains active beyond infancy, it can keep a child’s nervous system in a heightened “fight-or-flight” state.

When this reflex is present, you may notice:
▪️Overreaction to loud sounds, bright lights, or sudden movement
▪️Heightened anxiety or difficulty with emotional regulation
▪️Easily startled or fearful in new situations
▪️Difficulty calming down once upset
▪️Poor impulse control
▪️Sensitivity to changes in routine or transitions
▪️Motion sensitivity or car sickness
▪️Sleep challenges

Educational impact can include:
🔺Difficulty focusing in busy or stimulating environments🔺Becoming overwhelmed in classroom settings🔺Trouble with transitions or unexpected changes🔺Avoidance of new tasks due to fear of failure🔺Emotional outbursts or shutdowns when stressed🔺Challenges with attention and regulation

Learning starts in the nervous system.
Schedule an evaluation with us to find out how we can support your child’s development through Core Learning Skills Training.
