But the statue she remembered was not the one the scientists describe. Hers was seated, one arm outstretched, and at the end of that arm a lantern that lit the whole temple.

Nobody really knows what it looked like. It was destroyed a very long time ago. Which opens a possibility worth sitting with: that she was not misremembering the statue we reconstruct today, but remembering an older one that stood there before it.

I trained under Dolores in 2006. Twenty years on, it is still her own stories that land the hardest.
