Many people assume that if a little melatonin helps with sleep, then more must work even better. But when it comes to melatonin, more is not always better. Melatonin is your body’s signal of darkness.
Naturally, levels rise at night and fall by morning so your brain knows it is time to wake up and feel alert. Taking very high doses may create a mismatch between your body and the environment. Even if it helps you fall asleep, excessive amounts may leave you feeling groggy or mentally foggy the next morning.
The goal is not to overwhelm your brain with a massive sleep signal. It is to support your natural rhythm. Sometimes feeling exhausted in the morning is not because you need more coffee. It may be because your body is still getting the message that it is nighttime.
