The California Black Women's Health Project (CABWHP) is the only statewide, non-profit organization that is solely committed to improving the health of California's 1.2 million Black women and girls through advocacy, education, outreach, and policy. We focus on empowering Black women to take personal responsibility for our own health and to advocate for changes in policies that negatively affect Black women's health status.

There is power in being nourished.
There is power in nourishing.
And there is power in knowing that we don’t do this alone.

This Black Breastfeeding Week, we’re honoring the wisdom, care & collective power that live within Black people & Black communities. Because breastfeeding is more than an individual act; it’s connection, culture, care & community.

Join us for an upcoming virtual conversation, where Kavisa Wood, IBCLC will guide us in exploring Black breastfeeding, the power of community & how breastfeeding can nourish babies while uplifting the communities that surround them.

Black Breastfeeding Week is a reminder that Black mothers deserve to feel supported, seen, and cared for at every step of their breastfeeding journey.

For too long, Black women have faced barriers to breastfeeding that go far beyond personal choice. Access to support, culturally affirming care, time, resources & the ability to make informed decisions about our bodies all matter.

This week, we’re celebrating the Black moms & parents who are breastfeeding, chestfeeding, pumping, supplementing, combo feeding or simply doing what works best for themselves & their babies.

Because feeding your baby doesn’t always look the same. And it doesn’t have to.

What matters is having the support, information & resources to make the choice that works for you & your family, without judgment.

Here’s to our babies, our families, our communities & the people who show up for us along the way. 🖤

Tending to wellness, unapologetically.

We inform. We advocate. We empower. We uplift. We listen. We unite.

From community organizing to health education, we’re shifting power & amplifying Black women’s voices. We’re dismantling systemic inequities, unapologetically.

Black women’s enduring care for our communities & our contributions to society’s progress remind us that we are deserving of both celebration & rest. We carry so much, including responsibilities, expectations & the well-being of others. And, it is critical to consider what we can set down in order to care for ourselves. What will you choose to release, even for a moment, so that you can breathe, restore & make space for your own well-being?

Remember: caring for yourself, is also nurturing the well-being & possibilities of future generations.

Remembering our resistance, unapologetically.

Black August is a time to remember the people who refused to accept oppression as inevitable. The organizers, freedom fighters, political prisoners & community members who challenged systems built to silence, limit & disenfranchise Black communities.

Their resistance was not always celebrated in its time. But it created pathways for us to speak, organize, gather & demand better.

Remembering is more than looking back. It’s recognizing and giving flowers to individuals who currently confront injustice, protect one another, hold space for Black healing & fight for a world where Black people can truly flourish.

This Black August & beyond, we remember. We honor. We celebrate & thank legacy leaders. We carry it forward.

What are you carrying forward?
Tell us: What lesson from Black resistance are you carrying forward?

Nurturing our spirits, unapologetically.

Black August asks us to remember that liberation is not simply something we strive for. It’s something we practice in how we care for ourselves & one another.

For Black women, that can mean choosing rest without guilt, making room for joy, tending to our bodies & refusing the expectation that we must always give more of ourselves.

Nurturing your spirit is not a distraction from the work. It helps sustain us for the work ahead.

This Black August, we encourage you to make room for yourself, your joy & the fullness of your life.

Dedicated funding & equitable access to care are essential to reducing health disparities & improving health outcomes.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, August 4th, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will make a decision that could help protect lifesaving care for the communities that need it most.

MLK Community Hospital has never been included in the annual Measure B funding formula, despite serving one of Los Angeles County’s highest-need communities. At a time when massive federal cuts to Medicaid are creating a financial crisis for safety net hospitals, we cannot afford to let this inequity continue.

It’s time to mobilize for our wellness! Scroll through to learn how to get involved or visit conta.cc/4wCcsJg
