Continuing a decades-long tradition, the California Department of Developmental Services has once again been asked to help gather ornaments made by Californians with intellectual and developmental disabilities for placement and display on the Capitol Tree.

This is the large, outdoor tree featured near the west steps of the State Capitol building in Sacramento. And we at Lanterman are reaching out to our community, particularly our service providers, to create and send ornaments.

This request is for large, outdoor-friendly ornaments. All large ornaments for the outdoor Capitol Tree must be received at the Department’s Sacramento office BY 5 P.M. ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2026.

Captain members at Lanterman work with community professionals and local education agencies to extend knowledge about autism and evidence-based practices to parents, service coordinators and service providers in our community.

Autistic learners and others with developmental disabilities benefit from the incorporation of effective teaching and behavior support where they work, live and enjoy themselves in their communities. Professional development for direct service professionals in using Evidence-Based Practices is now available through the Lanterman CAPTAIN.

Service providers learn about the characteristics of autism and the importance of using effective strategies to support individuals in socialization, communication, self-care, and participating in their communities.

Interested direct service professionals can also participate in more in-depth trainings in using visual supports to promote independence and the use of prompting to teach new skills. Training materials based on AFIRM (Autism Focused Intervention Resources and Modules) and modified for use with adults review the research evidence for specific approaches, and teach step-by-step implementation, and data-based methods to evaluate success in using the techniques.

Direct service professionals benefit through increased job satisfaction and job advancement by learning meaningful skills to better support individuals with developmental disabilities in their daily lives.

The California Department of Developmental Services invites you to a webinar about the New Federal Access Rule Grievance Procedure offered on either November 4 or November 12 via Zoom.

These new procedures will provide more protections for individuals who file complaints and will outline important changes to the grievance process.

Background:

What’s changing: Starting February 1, 2027, California will begin using a new grievance process. This new process will replace the current section 4731 complaints, citizen complaints, and general complaints with one, combined system. Enforcement will start in December 2027.

Why the changes are happening: In 2024, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services created the Access Rule, which requires each state to have a clear grievance process. Right now, Section 4731 of the Welfare and Institutions Code allows people who are eligible for regional center services to file complaints against a regional center, a state-run facility, or a provider. We also accept citizen and general complaints. The new process will bring all of these together into one easier-to-use system.

The Emergency Coordinators from Golden Gate Regional Center and San Andreas Regional Center will be hosting a statewide Fall Safety webinar via Zoom on Thursday, October 29 from 1 to 1:30 p.m. for anyone that is supported by the regional center system.

This training, part of the Ready Together: Emergency Preparedness Series, will be focused on the commonly associated disasters within the fall season. In addition to learning the different steps you can take to prepare, respond and recover from those disasters.
