I wanted to share some key things from a Parent Training Workshop that one of our BCBA faciliated.
Understanding the Functions of Behavior
Every behavior happens for a reason — it’s a form of communication. When children have difficulty expressing themselves with words, their behavior often becomes the message.
What Is Behavior?
Behavior is anything a person does that can be seen or measured — from smiling, playing, and asking for help to crying or refusing a task.
All behavior serves a purpose and tells us something about what the child needs in that moment.
The ABC Model
A helpful way to understand behavior is by looking at what happens before and after it.
A (Antecedent): What happens right before the behavior
B (Behavior): The behavior itself
C (Consequence): What happens after the behavior
This model helps identify why a behavior keeps happening and what might be reinforcing it.
The Four Functions of Behavior
1. Attention – Trying to get interaction or reaction from others (even negative attention counts!)
2. Access – Wanting to get a preferred item, activity, or person
3. Escape – Trying to avoid or delay something unpleasant or challenging
3. Sensory – Doing something because it feels good or is calming
