Welcome to Episode 30 of Shades of Pleasure, where Mou, Wayne and Sacha, s*x and relationship professionals, explore non-negotiables in non-monogamy.

When it comes to consensual non-monogamy, there is a lot of talk about boundaries, rules, agreements, and consent. But what happens when the very rules we’ve created to protect our relationships begin to restrict our freedom, authenticity, and ability to communicate?

Making S🤫x Work Seen and Safe: Destigmatize. Decriminalize. Protect.
By Jamie Azar, Intimacy Coach
Jamie Azar | Relationship and Intimacy Coach

Society, for the most part, is largely ignorant to the systemic challenges and emotional impacts legal barriers and rights to safety have on s🤫x workers. S🤫x work is one of the oldest forms of labor, existing across decades, generations, cultures, and societies; it has existed in virtually every society, woven into the fabrics of the personal, social, political, economic and spiritual spheres of different worlds. S🤫x work has been revered in certain cultures, honored as a ceremonial and sacred act, contrary to the shame and criminalization of our modern legal systems and general ethos of the public.

Fast forward to today: s🤫x workers face countless systemic challenges, from criminalization and legal barriers like a lack of labor rights and protection, to stigma and social marginalization, all of which can have detrimental mental health impacts and which invalidate s🤫x workers' right to safety, protection, and freedom.

Vanilla S🤫x Gets a Bad Rep
By Jamie Azar, Intimacy Coach
Jamie Azar | Relationship and Intimacy Coach

As a s🤫x, relationship, and intimacy coach, I often feel like “vanilla s🤫x” gets a bad rep.

When I say vanilla s🤫x, what comes to mind for you?

For many people, vanilla s🤫x means missionary, following a predictable routine or sequence of events, generally starting with kissing and moving toward oral s🤫x, pe*******on, climax, and or**sm. It can also be associated with more heteronormative ideas of what “s🤫x” is supposed to look like, particularly pen*s-in-vagina or penetrative s🤫x. For others, vanilla simply means the absence of kink.

Kink itself can be loosely defined as s🤫xual interests, practices, or experiences that fall outside what is considered normative. I’ve even heard people jokingly describe kink as “anything your Aunt Sally might not approve of.”

But what if vanilla s🤫x isn’t actually about the absence of kink?

I was recently scrolling Instagram and came across a clip from an interview with S🤫xologist Kimmy Inch, who was speaking about this very topic. One idea she shared really resonated with me: vanilla s🤫x isn’t necessarily the absence of kink. It’s s🤫x centered around functionality, which got me thinking and informed the content of this article...

Own Your Pleasure: 5 Ways to Enhance Your Or***ms
By Jamie Azar, Intimacy Coach

As a s🤫xologist and relationship and intimacy coach, I constantly encourage people to expand their definitions of s🤫x, while reminding them that s🤫x exists beyond pe*******on and or**sm. Having an or**sm doesn’t necessarily equate to s🤫xual satisfaction, nor does it have to be a requirement for great s🤫x.

Additionally, many people may feel forced or pressured to have an or**sm during partnered s🤫x; others experience performance anxiety around or**sm, whether it is going to happen, when it’s going to happen, or how. Some people feel like they have to rush to it or through it, and all of this can take away from presence, attunement, and overall enjoyment of the experience.

What if we reimagined the whole experience as or**smic? What if we approached pleasure and arousal as a holistic journey—led by curiosity, compassion, and tenderness?

Today, I’m inviting you—

Whether you’re single or partnered, to explore the art of cu***ng.

So, What Makes Someone Great in Bed?
By Jamie Azar, Intimacy Coach
Jamie Azar, CSRC

One aspect I love about the work I do is supporting people in expanding what can sometimes be a limited definition of s🤫x.

Within this work, I may ask clients to think back to pleasurable or satisfying s🤫xual moments and memories or simply shout out words that characterize “great s🤫x” for them.

Rarely, and perhaps surprisingly to some, do people cite or**sm, pe*******on, or even the duration or frequency of s🤫x. More often, I hear words like pleasure, connection, safety, trust, fun, mutual, playful, adventurous...

Kink: Using What You Already Have for Erotic Play
By Jamie Azar, Intimacy Coach
Jamie Azar, CSRC

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of kink? Do you think of a closet full of leather, whips, chains, and ropes? Well, while this certainly may be the contents of a kinky closet, they don’t have to be.

Whether we walk around with myths and assumptions about kink due to pop culture and media, with oftentimes inaccurate, taboo, or oversimplified representations of kink, or simply due to a lack of education and exposure to other kinky folx and communities, a lot of people may feel intimidated by the idea of it. Perhaps a useful place to start is to not only think about kink as the activities in which we partake, but a mindset and approach we use to engage in s🤫xual and non-s🤫xual activities.
