I've written a lot about low self-esteem all over the internet. I thought it might be useful to collect some of the most popular tips in one place. So first... What is self-esteem? To put it simply, it's a measure of how you think and feel about yourself in relation to other people.

Throughout history, there have been countless athletes who were born with great talents and physical skill, but who somehow never really lived up to their promise. We can all probably think of a few people we knew who showed great potential early in their lives, but who somehow never quite knuckled down and applied themselves. And you can also probably think of people who started out with relatively average or even below average capabilities, who went on to make the very most of their potential through their dedication, resilience, and absolute commitment to becoming the best they could be.

Sometimes the strongest food cravings hit when you're at your weakest point emotionally. You may turn to food for comfort — consciously or subconsciously — when facing a difficult problem, feeling stressed or even feeling bored.
Emotional eating can sabotage your weight-loss efforts. It often leads to eating too much — especially too much of high-calorie, sweet and fatty foods. The good news is that if you're prone to emotional eating, you can take steps to regain control of your eating habits and get back on track with your weight management goals.

Your brain can learn in more ways than just consciously. In fact, much of what you’ve learned in your life has been absorbed in other-than-conscious ways. From your native language, your body language, your taste in food, and your sense of humor to your attitude towards your work, your self-concept, and the way you relate to your significant others, none of these are things that people learn consciously and deliberately. They are, for the most part, a result of your subconscious mind absorbing patterns from other people, from your culture, and from the world around you.

We’ve all had the experience of feeling that some particular thing ‘should’ have happened in the past, or that we or someone else ‘should’ have done a certain thing that we didn’t do in an earlier situation, and it’s all too easy to get sucked into reliving these mental movies of the past over and over. You might have particular memories that you keep dwelling on, that cause you anger or sadness, or give you a real sense of frustration that you can’t go back in time and change them.

We’ve all had the experience of feeling that some particular thing ‘should’ have happened in the past, or that we or someone else ‘should’ have done a certain

It was once thought that your personality became set in stone by the time you were an adult. Research shows that this is simply not the case. For example, a two thousand twelve study published in the journal Social Indicators Research tracked personality changes in over eight thousand five hundred people over a four-year period. They found that there were measurable changes in people’s personality traits over this time and that changes in personality were much more strongly correlated with people’s overall life satisfaction than changes in their economic circumstances. So when you develop qualities like emotional stability, openness, curiosity, and self-discipline, your overall enjoyment of life increases much more than if you’d simply received a financial windfall.

Perhaps you can think of a time you avoided a particular situation, or you didn’t participate in a particular activity, because you didn’t want to risk making a mistake and looking foolish in front of others. Or maybe you can recall getting negative feedback from a boss, or a bad mark in an exam, and it felt really painful, maybe even devastating to you at the time. Or there may have been a time when you gave up learning something because you felt like you were struggling, and you told yourself that you were simply no good at it. All of these are signs that, at least at times in life, you’ve been operating from a fixed mindset, as opposed to a growth mindset.

Most of us learn that bullying, threatening and verbally abusing the people around us is deeply wrong, but it’s all too common for people to privately bully, threaten and abuse themselves in their own minds. You may have noticed that you criticize yourself in all kinds of unpleasant, unhelpful ways, and say things to yourself that you would never dream of saying to a friend, or even to someone who wasn’t a friend. In my experience as a hypnotherapist, even apparently confident and successful people can incessantly criticize themselves in private, and worry that they’re not good enough, that they’re going to be found out, or that they’ll never make up for that mistake they made when they were seventeen years old.

Sports performance, as every serious sportsperson knows, is as much about what's going on in your head as what's going on in your body. We've all seen top-notch golfers lose their game for years on end, or sprinters lose those critical hundredths of a second that make the difference at the finishing line, due to a seemingly insurmountable anxiety about the outcome. My sports performance hypnosis sessions are based on the latest psychological research into what distinguishes the top performers from the rest, and how successful athletes get that edge. These three sports hypnosis tips will help your clients fine tune their game so that, whatever sports they engage in, they will get the very best from themselves, physically, mentally, emotionally. They will learn how to cultivate — and maintain — the attitudes and determination that will take them to the next level.

Many people are so much harsher towards themselves than they ever would be towards one of their friends or family members. As a hypnotherapist, I’ve heard countless people tell me about how they spend all day criticizing themselves in the privacy of their own minds. Why do they do this? Sometimes it’s because people have impossibly high standards — they feel like they need to do everything absolutely perfectly, and if they make even the smallest mistake, they tell themselves that they’re a total failure, and they might feel an overwhelming sense of guilt that’s completely disproportionate to the little thing they did wrong.
