Traveling to a high-altitude destination?
High altitude can place additional stress on the body, especially for individuals managing lymphedema, lipedema, chronic edema, venous insufficiency, cancer treatment recovery, or post-surgical lymphatic changes.
At higher elevations, changes in air pressure, oxygen levels, prolonged sitting, dehydration, and reduced movement may contribute to increased fluid retention, heaviness, tightness, or tissue discomfort.
Supportive travel strategies may include:
• Wearing properly fitted compression if recommended by your provider
• Moving frequently during long flights or car rides
• Performing ankle pumps, hand pumps, shoulder rolls, or walking breaks
• Staying hydrated
• Avoiding tight clothing that creates restriction
• Protecting the skin from cuts, irritation, and sun exposure
• Elevating the affected area when able
• Monitoring for increased heaviness, tightness, redness, warmth, pain, or shortness of breath
Lymphedema care is not only about treatment after symptoms increase. It is also about prevention, planning, and knowing how to support your body during travel and changes in environment.
