What began in 2022 as a response to a critical need for infection prevention education, Kentucky Infection Prevention Training Center grew into a meaningful resource for healthcare professionals across Kentucky and beyond. As the federal grant supporting the Kentucky Infection Prevention (KyIP) Training Center concludes, the program will officially transition out of operation.

While KyIP's chapter is coming to an immediate end, the importance of infection prevention education remains as vital as ever. Partners of KyIP, Norton Healthcare and Norton Children's are committed to carrying this work forward by continuing to provide healthcare professionals with relevant, evidence-based education, expert insights and accessible learning opportunities.

While a few special pathogens are grabbing headlines, let’s not lose sight of a very real and ongoing threat: measles.

As of May 21, 2026, the U.S. has reported 1,952 confirmed measles cases — nearly 2,000 cases already this year. For comparison, there were 2,288 cases in all of 2025.

Measles spreads incredibly easily, and declining vaccination rates in some communities continue to increase the risk of outbreaks. Staying informed and staying vaccinated remain our strongest tools for protection.

Hantavirus and Ebola have been in the news a lot lately, and while both situations are being closely monitored, it’s a good reminder of the basics when dealing with potential special pathogens: Identify, Isolate, and Inform.

✔ Inform infection prevention, leadership, and public health as appropriate
