☀️ Summer is here, and sun protection doesn’t have to be complicated!

Remember the simple rule:

👕 Slip on protective clothing
🧴 Slop on broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen
🧢 Slap on a hat

A few extra tips:
✔️ Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours
✔️ Reapply after swimming or sweating
✔️ Don’t forget ears, lips, tops of feet, and the back of the neck
✔️ Seek shade during peak sun hours (10 AM–4 PM)

Sunburns can happen quickly, especially in children, and protecting skin now helps reduce the risk of skin damage later in life.

Have fun outside, but don’t forget to Slip, Slop, and Slap! ☀️

I recommend supplements to my patients all the time — and I stand behind that. But this is your reminder that not all supplements are created equal, and the FDA cannot protect you before a product hits shelves.

Here’s the truth: the FDA only regulates supplements after the fact. That means products can be sold, purchased, and consumed before anyone catches a problem. And lately? There have been some serious ones.

⚠️ Recent recalls worth knowing:

Tejocote root supplements — multiple brands were found to contain toxic yellow oleander, a poisonous plant that can cause heart arrhythmias, neurological damage, and in some cases, death. Several companies refused to recall their products even after the FDA intervened.

Primal Herbs Volume — found to contain sildenafil (the active ingredient in Vi**ra) — completely undeclared on the label. Dangerous for anyone taking heart medications.

Vital Nutrients Aller-C — a brand I know many of you are familiar with — was recalled earlier this year for undeclared allergens including egg, hazelnut, and soy. Potentially life-threatening for allergy sufferers. The issue was discovered through routine internal testing and promptly reported to the FDA. This is actually what responsible companies do — but it’s a reminder that even reputable brands are not immune.

So what do you do with this information?

✅ Buy from a medical dispensary or provider-recommended source
✅ Avoid random storefronts on Amazon
✅ Check the FDA recall database regularly
✅ Always tell your provider every supplement you take

Supplements can be powerful, effective tools. I use them in my practice and I believe in them. But your sourcing and your awareness matter just as much as the supplement itself.

☀️ Summer isn’t just for pool days — it’s one of the BEST times to get ahead on ADHD management. Whether you’re navigating this for your child or yourself, here’s what’s worth exploring while schedules slow down:

🧬 MTHFR Testing
This genetic variant affects how your body processes folate — and it matters a lot for ADHD. Those with MTHFR variants may have impaired methylation, directly impacting dopamine and serotonin production. If you don’t know your status, ask your provider. It can change everything about how you supplement.

🩸 Iron/Ferritin Levels
Low ferritin is one of the most under-recognized contributors to ADHD symptoms at any age. Iron is essential for dopamine synthesis, and ferritin can be low even when a standard CBC looks normal. Request a ferritin level specifically — don’t let this one get missed.

💊 Summer = supplement trial season
A slower schedule means a better window to trial and actually observe what’s working. Some worth discussing with your provider:
→ Magnesium glycinate (sleep + calm focus)
→ Omega-3s (mood + brain inflammation)
→ Zinc + Methylfolate (especially if MTHFR+)
→ Saffron — promising research for dopamine and serotonin support
→ Functional mushrooms — Lion’s Mane for cognition, Reishi for stress and sleep
→ ENLYTE — a prescription medical food for ADHD with methylation challenges. Ask your provider if it’s a fit.

Summer gives us the time to observe, adjust, and optimize. Use it. 🙌

Nothing here is medical advice. Work with your provider to determine what’s right for you or your child.

So proud of you, Azure! 💙🐴

You’ve worked so hard for this, and it’s been so fun watching you and Elle grow together this past year. There have been a lot of early mornings, long days, and miles put in to get here. Also can’t forget to mention the coach that has been there through it all to build you up- Sarah Younger

I can’t wait to head to AEC later this summer and cheer you on. No matter how it goes, getting there is a huge accomplishment, and you should be proud of yourself.

Now let’s make some memories and have some fun! ❤️

Fever yesterday, rash and congestion today — as a mom/parent myself, I know how scary this combo looks. Let me walk you through what I’m actually thinking in the exam room.

First — take a breath. After 17 years as an NP, I can tell you that most of the time, this trio has a completely boring explanation. And boring is good.

Here’s my thought process:

The first thing I notice is the order. Fever came first, then the rash? That actually helps me. It tells me this is likely your body doing its job — fighting something off. A rash that shows up after a fever is almost always viral. Your kid’s immune system is working.

What I’m usually looking at:
→ A viral rash (incredibly common, clears on its own)
→ The tail end of a cold or flu
→ Roseola in little ones — fever spikes, then drops, then rash appears. Textbook.

The congestion fits right in. Viruses don’t read textbooks — they hit multiple systems at once.

What I need parents to watch for:
→ Rash that appears like a “bullseye”
→ Any rash with yellow colored crusts
→ Petechiae — tiny pinpoint red dots that don’t fade when you press on them — call me or go to the ER
→ Your child seems confused, unusually limp, or won’t wake easily — ER, now

BUT a blotchy rash on the trunk with a runny nose and a fever that’s already breaking? Nine times out of ten, that’s a virus on its way out.

Febrile seizures are one of the most common neurological events in childhood — and one of the most misunderstood. 🧠

As an NP with over 17 years of experience — more than 10 of those spent specifically in pediatric neurology — this is one of the topics I’m most passionate about setting the record straight on. I have sat with hundreds of terrified parents in that room. Let me share what I tell them. 💙

More often than not, there’s a family history lurking in the background. 🧬 If a parent or sibling had them, their child is significantly more likely to have one too. It’s not random — it’s genetic.

They also have a very specific window: most happen between 6 months and 5 years old, peaking around 12-18 months. Once kids age out of that range? They’re largely in the clear.

And here’s the part that surprises most parents — it’s rarely about HOW high the fever is. It’s about the sudden change in temperature and that individual child’s neurological threshold. Some kids seize at 101°F. Others never seize at 104°F. The number on the thermometer isn’t the villain. 🌡️

A simple febrile seizure does NOT increase your child’s risk of developing epilepsy. That fear is real and valid, and after 10 years in pediatric neurology, I want to squash it every time. 💙

So does every febrile seizure need an ER visit? Not always. If the seizure stopped on its own in under 5 minutes, your child is back to their baseline, and there are no other concerning symptoms — a call to your pediatrician or NP may be all you need. Save the ER for the red flags ⬇️
🔴 Seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes
🔴 Focal or one-sided movements
🔴 Child not returning to baseline
🔴 Repeated seizures within 24 hours
🔴 Child under 6 months or with no clear source of fever

Your child does not automatically need a CT scan, spinal tap, or hospital admission for a simple febrile seizure. Advocate for your kid and know the difference. 🩺
