It's hard not to compare yourself to other people when you're working toward something you want.
A better career, or better health.
A stronger relationship, or perhaps a successful business.
You look around and see people who seem further ahead and wonder what they're doing that you're not.
But comparison creates a problem.
The moment your attention shifts from your own path to someone else's, you stop building and start measuring.
And measuring rarely creates progress.
I've found that the people who achieve meaningful things aren't usually obsessed with what everyone else is doing.
Instead, they develop a singular focus on where they're headed. They're focused on improving their own position by making better decisions, having meaningful conversations, taking consistent action, and continuing to move forward one day at a time.
Because desperation, envy, constant comparison, and being distracted by what everyone else is doing drain energy that could be spent moving forward.
The goal isn't to beat someone else to the finish line.
The goal is to become the person capable of reaching it.
