The Sickle Cell Association of Kentuckiana, founded in October 2000, is an advocate and resource for patients and families throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana. (SCAK) is a tax-exempt non profit organization that provides education, support, and advocacy for individuals with sickle cell disease and their families. SCAK is dedicated to increasing awareness of this disease and supporting endeavo

rs that assure prompt and appropriate medical care. Our target audience, however, is not limited to those personally affected by sickle cell. Our mission encompasses educating the community as well as medical professionals about the disease and resources available.

Sickle cell trait is important because it can be passed to children:

* If one parent has sickle cell trait and the other has normal hemoglobin, each child has:
* 50% chance of having sickle cell trait
* 50% chance of having normal hemoglobin
* If both parents have sickle cell trait, each pregnancy has:
* 25% chance of sickle cell disease
* 50% chance of sickle cell trait
* 25% chance of normal hemoglobin
