Vaccine reactions happen. Vet medicine has too often denied that, and I don't want any of our listeners to feel brushed off.

I also believe the extremes on either side are dangerous. You get to decide what's right for your pet, and that decision should be based on your pet's real risks, made with a vet you trust.

I understand where the distrust of vaccines comes from, and I'll always be honest about reactions. I also know I can keep your puppy from dying of parvo, and that matters to me.

I grew up believing suffering was sacred. That belief shaped how my family saw euthanasia, and it shaped how they talked about my mom’s death too. As a vet, I had to decide for myself what I believe, and I’m still learning the longer I practice.

Dr. Rob Silver has the best way of explaining the microbiome. Your dog's gut is a neighborhood with thousands of residents. When they get along, they help keep your dog healthy. When a few juvenile delinquents move in, problems can show up in digestion, and they may even be connected to issues elsewhere in the body, like allergies.

His bigger point is that every animal is their own universe, so what one dog's gut needs isn't what another's needs.

A recent Gallup survey found that 81% of vets say we offer a lower cost plan when cost is tight. Only 73% of clients say they ever heard that offer. 'That's too much for me right now' is a complete sentence in my exam room and always warrants a dialogue. 1 to 10, how easy is that for you to say to your veterinary team?

My own cat needed a tooth extraction this month, and when I got the estimate I had a moment I wasn't expecting. There was an anesthesiologist, a CT because something about the presentation looked off, and by the time I added it up I was doing the thing I've watched so many of my own clients do: wondering if I could ask them to simplify it without seeming like I didn't care.

I almost called back. I didn't. It turns out being on the other side of that conversation taught me something about what my clients go through, and I talk through it in this week's episode along with a few other things I've never really said out loud before.
