At the start of my career (many moons ago) parents had to try to soothe their babies under phototherapy lights that essentially looked like a suitcase. We've come a long way, but this is even better!

Daniel John, a University of Michigan Medical School student, is the inventor of BiliRoo, a potential low-cost, non-electric device to treat jaundice in newborns.

John's upbringing in Nepal, where he saw the need for health care access in low-resource settings, led to his interest in engineering and medicine. After learning from doctors around the world about neonatal jaundice, John began working on a prototype and connected with experts in pediatric care.

“Relatives that knew how to sew taught me some of the basics, and those were some of the first devices that we iterated,” John said.

The wearable device has won numerous awards, completed a feasibility study, and will enter into clinical trials soon.
