Our Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) student intern, Aaliyah Stewart, who is completing her placement with the Barren River Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living (BRADD), recently had the opportunity to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the expansion of the Barren County Family YMCA and its new senior center.

The event provided Aaliyah with a firsthand look at the importance of community partnerships and local investments that promote healthy aging, social connection and access to resources for older adults. She also had the exciting opportunity to meet Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear during the celebration!

Experiences like these are an important part of our Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program, connecting students with community partners and giving them opportunities to see how organizations across sectors work together to support older adults and strengthen age-friendly communities.

We are grateful for our continued partnership with BRADD and for the meaningful learning opportunities they provide our students throughout the region.

We spent another lovely day yesterday at the 15th annual Gold Standard of Optimal Aging Award Ceremony celebrating older adults who inspire us to live life more fully no matter our age. We were delighted to hear about each of their lives—their hard work, resilience through adversity, dedicated service and care for their families and communities, beloved hobbies, and future goals. They also reminded us of the importance of maintaining a sense of humor through it all.

We’re so thankful for our sponsors who helped make this day happen. We also appreciate everyone who showed up to recognize the honorees along with us, with special thanks to Mayor Craig Greenberg and former mayors Mayor Greg Fischer and Jerry Abramson; Rep. Morgan McGarvey and former representatives Mike Ward and John Yarmuth; Steve Trager, executive chairman for Republic Bank; and University of Louisville President Gerry Bradley.

Many people experience changes in their memory and recall as a normal part of aging. However, significant changes in memory, thinking and language could be a sign of dementia. Learn the difference in this virtual presentation with Dr. Josephine Gomes on Sept. 18, 12–1 p.m.
