"Happy Birthday to Me"

Balloons, banners, roses, hat, cake…looks like I had a birthday! I sure did celebrate my birthday on August 21. We all remember looking forward to our birthdays in our younger years. I so recall being thrilled to turn 13 because I was officially out of childhood. And all of the big ones: 18, 21, 25, 30, 40. Oh, how the years go by. I remember crying when the cake was brought out at my 50th birthday family dinner. Wow, to be 50!

But here I am, turning 69. I’m not totally sure how this happened. I actually went into the paper file and checked my birth certificate to just be sure there was no error.

In January I underwent an emergency open heart surgery that saved my life. No hints, no prepping, no nudges, just boom! One moment I’m moving along merrily in life and then I’m not.

I am amazingly thankful to acknowledge a birthday. Would I rather have turned 49 or 59? Perhaps. But I celebrate with gratitude and I celebrate a number that my father, two brothers, and other dear family members and friends never saw. I’ll take it. I’ll take it, along with the crow’s feet and wrinkled hands. I’ve earned them.

I remember reading in a Lincoln biography that he often pondered his presidency while walking with a baby in his arms. The book noted that after his own children were grown, he once borrowed a baby from a neighbor so that he could pace with a warm baby bundle and process his thoughts. It helped him stay calm and focused. That may be a myth, but I certainly understand the idea.

Here I am with my 11-month-old grandson. He is a joy. I could breathe him in. Holding and cuddling a baby triggers positive hormonal shifts, including an increase in β€œfeel-good” chemicals like oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin, which help reduce stress and promote a serene, buoyant mood.

These happy chemicals also support essential physical functions like movement, digestion, blood flow, and heart rate. Amazingly, reduced inflammation and improved wound healing are benefits, as well.

There are things we can do to increase our mood-boosting hormones, including eating a healthy diet and exercise. I do those things. But for me, a baby in my arms works like a charm.

Smell the Flowers

Why do we find it a badge of honor to say, β€œI’m so busy," β€œI have a lot going on,"or β€œI’m so stressed with my schedule”? Does it make us look like real go-getters and high-profile Type A's? To some people, perhaps, but that is a facade. The true high-profile person understands that hard work is an absolute necessity and that it is okay, and even more than okay, it is wise to stop and take a breath.
Smell the flowers or the coffee or the musty basement or the cat’s litterbox. Smell whatever but stop ... and smell.

Being productive, truly productive, involves some "ahs" or space, or an exhale. The real badge of honor answer to the question, β€œHow are you?”, is β€œI am managing my life quite well. I have a good balance of work and play and rest.” It takes some practice to be able to say that honestly. But it is doable.

The health benefits of slowing your pace are:

Lowers blood pressure, lowers risk of stroke, reduces fatigue, reduces inflammation, slows heart rate, and promotes emotional well-being.

Now, take a deep belly breath and blow it out slowly, while drawing in your abs. Don’t you feel better already?
