most people associate skin to skin with mom and baby. but dads, this one is for you. 💙
when a father holds his newborn skin to skin, his brain releases oxytocin – the same bonding hormone triggered in mothers. research shows this is not weaker in fathers. it is the same system, activated by the same stimulus: direct physical contact with their baby. cortisol drops measurably. caregiving confidence increases. the biology does not require nine months of pregnancy.
for baby, the benefits are just as significant. heart rate steadies. breathing stabilizes. body temperature regulates. stress hormones drop. babies held skin to skin by their fathers cry less, sleep more calmly, and quickly learn to recognize dad’s scent, voice, and heartbeat.
and from a feeding standpoint, dad skin to skin gives a breastfeeding mom rest while keeping baby calm and regulated. for babies in feeding therapy, a regulated baby learns new skills faster. this is something concrete and powerful a dad can do even if he is not the one feeding.
