ALWAYS presume competence when approaching a disabled person.

This means talking to the disabled person first and not their caregiver, saying hi (no baby talk) and asking what their name is, giving a compliment, and smiling. If someone is non-verbal, you should still talk to them and interact because most will understand. These simple interactions can be very meaningful for the disabled person if you presume competence. 💙✌🏻
