As we have seen with the progression of this disease over the past few weeks, tackling COVID-19 is a community responsibility. We ask everyone to continue following the direction of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Virginia Department of Health as well as state and federal governments.
As you may know, Governor Northam issued an order last night limiting patrons to 10 or less in restaurants, theaters, and fitness centers. We are confident that our local business owners will partner with us to protect our community’s health and safety by complying with Governor Northam’s order.
Here in Lynchburg, we are lucky to have a large number of diverse local businesses. Many of our beloved local restaurants and stores have transitioned to carryout, delivery, curbside service, and online shopping. We encourage residents to patronize these businesses, as they need our support now more than ever.
During this unprecedented time, our priority is the health and safety of our officers and our community. First and foremost, we are asking our officers to do the same things the CDC and VDH are asking the public to do - washing hands frequently, practicing social distancing when possible based on the nature of the situation, and cleaning cars and shared surfaces as often as possible. This means that like the general public, our officers won't be shaking hands with members of the community while they are out and about as a precaution to keep themselves and the public safe.
Our officers are still out on the streets of Lynchburg maintaining public safety; we have a difficult job in these times because in situations where others can distance themselves we cannot. To ensure the health of our staff and the community, we have limited access to our buildings. Additionally, our officers are equipped with Personal Protective Equipment that they will utilize if they come into contact with an individual who may have COVID-19.
Though the days ahead may be very different and sometimes difficult, Lynchburg is a resilient city that comes together in times of need. Your Lynchburg Police Department is here to partner with you and protect you, and we will get through this as a community.
