For years, he was told nothing was wrong.

Multiple doctors.
Multiple specialists.
Physical therapy.
MRIs.
X-rays.
CT scans.

Everything looked normal.

But he was still dealing with constant buttock pain.

When he came to see Dr. Timothy Calvert, the imaging didn't tell the whole story.

A physical examination revealed something that had been overlooked: a rare condition involving the inferior cluneal nerve, a small nerve that can become trapped and cause significant pain.

A week later, he underwent a diagnostic nerve block.

His pain improved by more than 80%.

Today he's sitting comfortably, standing longer, and back to doing the things he enjoys.

If you've been told your scans are normal but you're still in pain, don't assume you've run out of options.

Sometimes the answer isn't on the MRI.

She thought back surgery was her only option. She was wrong. 👇

Recently, I met a patient who had already tried everything.

âś… Chiropractic care
âś… Physical therapy
âś… Medications

Nothing worked.

Then she was told she needed low back surgery.

The problem?

She had just had a baby.

She was terrified that surgery would keep her from picking up her child, carrying them, and being the mom she wanted to be.

After a thorough evaluation, we found the true source of her pain.

It wasn't a surgical problem.

It was low back arthritis.

After treatment, she was able to get back to walking, playing with her child, and doing the things that mattered most.

This is why getting the right diagnosis matters.

Not every patient who is told they need surgery actually needs surgery.

What does your doctor actually need to make the right diagnosis? 👇

A lot of people think the answer is simple:

👉 Get an MRI.

But an MRI is only one piece of the puzzle.

A good diagnosis starts with understanding your symptoms.

Questions like:

• Where is your pain?
• When did it start?
• What does it feel like?
• What makes it worse?
• What makes it better?

These answers often provide just as much information as imaging.

Then comes something many patients overlook:

The physical exam.

Different conditions can look very similar on an MRI.

But your symptoms and physical exam help separate those conditions and identify the true source of your pain.

That's how doctors determine the right treatment—not just the treatment that matches an MRI report.

If you've been told you need surgery, ask yourself:

Did your doctor take a detailed history?
Did they perform a thorough physical exam?
Did they explain why your symptoms match the diagnosis?

Those questions matter.

👉 If you've been recommended for surgery or still don't have answers, it's time for a real evaluation:

What if your pain isn't actually coming from a muscle? 👇

A lot of people assume all pain is muscle pain.

But that's not always true.

Different types of pain tell us different things:

âś… Muscle pain

Achy
Localized
Usually improves within days or weeks

âś… Nerve pain

Burning
Tingling
Shooting pain
Travels down an arm or leg

âś… Joint pain

Worse with activity
Persistent
Often lasts for months or even years

These differences matter.

Because identifying the type of pain you're experiencing is often the first step toward finding the correct diagnosis.

If the source of your pain isn't identified correctly, treatment can be delayed and you may continue struggling with symptoms that never fully improve.

The goal isn't just to treat pain.

The goal is to understand where it's actually coming from.

What happens when your MRI isn’t actually explaining your pain? 👇

This happens more often than you think.

Your MRI may show:
• Disc bulges
• Disc herniations
• Arthritis
• Disc degeneration

But what if you've already tried treatments... and you're still hurting?

The problem may not be the MRI.

Because an MRI is a tool.

It's not your diagnosis.

The most important question is:

Do your symptoms actually match what shows up on the MRI?

That's why a thorough evaluation matters.

Where is your pain?
When did it start?
What makes it worse?
Does it travel?

These answers are often just as important as the imaging itself.

A proper diagnosis comes from putting together your symptoms, physical exam, and imaging findings—not relying on one piece of the puzzle.

At the Institute of Orthopedic Spine and Sports, we don't treat MRIs.

We treat patients.

What happens when you've tried everything... and you're still in pain? 👇

Physical therapy.
Chiropractic care.
Pain medications.
Injections.
MRIs.
X-rays.
Specialist after specialist.

Yet somehow...

You're still hurting.

This is one of the most common stories we hear.

The problem usually isn't that you've done nothing.

The problem is that nobody has identified the actual source of your pain.

A successful treatment plan starts with understanding why you're hurting in the first place.

That means listening to your story, performing a detailed evaluation, reviewing your symptoms, and connecting the dots.

Because treating the wrong problem—even with good treatments—rarely gets good results.

If you've tried everything and you're still in pain, it may be time for a fresh set of eyes.

Told you need back surgery? Watch this first 👇

Sometimes surgery is necessary.

But many times… it’s not.

The biggest mistake people make is moving forward without being 100% sure what’s actually causing their pain.

Because here’s the problem 👇
MRI findings alone don’t always explain your symptoms.

And if the wrong issue is treated—especially with surgery—
the pain can come right back.

That’s why the diagnosis has to match what you’re actually feeling.

Not just what shows up on imaging.

Before making a decision this big, make sure you have the full picture.

If your back pain is always in the same exact spot… that’s not random 👇

A lot of people assume it’s just a tight muscle.

But here’s the difference 👇
Muscle pain usually moves around…
and gets better pretty quickly.

When your pain stays in the exact same location over and over again,
that usually means something more specific is causing it.

In many cases, it’s coming from a joint in your spine.

These joints have small nerves that can keep sending pain signals again and again…
which is why the pain keeps coming back in the same spot.

That pattern matters.

Because when you identify the true source, you can actually treat it—
not just manage it.

Told you have a disc bulge? Don’t panic 👇

A lot of people hear “disc bulge” and immediately think that’s the reason for their pain.

But here’s what most people aren’t told 👇
Disc bulges are actually very common.

In fact, many people have them…
and feel no pain at all.

So just because it shows up on your MRI
doesn’t mean it’s the source of your symptoms.

If you’re dealing with back pain without a true disc herniation,
there’s a good chance the pain is actually coming from the joints in your spine.

That’s why identifying the true source matters before starting treatment.

Not everything you see on imaging needs to be treated.

If pain is shooting down your leg… that’s not just back pain 👇

This is a very specific pattern.

A lot of people notice it when they:
• Sit for too long
• Drive
• Stay in one position

The pain starts in your low back…
then travels to your hip, thigh, or even all the way down your leg.

Most people try stretching or exercises.

But if it keeps coming back, that’s usually because the real issue isn’t being treated.

In many cases, this means a nerve in your spine is being compressed.

That’s why the pain follows that exact path—and why sitting often makes it worse.

This isn’t random.
It’s nerve-related.
