Syringe exchanges are safe places for folks who use substances, not just people who inject them. We are actually drug user health programs!

If you have questions about your local harm reduction drug user health program please reach out!

No matter where you are along the spectrum of use we want you to be safe, healthy and alive!

If you need supplies or services but are nervous to come visit one of our sites we get it! You can always call first and ask all the questions you have.

Most drug user health programs do outreach and can meet people in public places like a coffee shop if that feels safer!

Side note: not all people who use or try drugs become addicted, not all use becomes chaotic and if we withhold lifesaving info, supplies and services to people who use drugs we will continue to watch people die! 💜💜💜

With housing being inaccessible and unaffordable for a large number of people and shelters being full we are seeing more people sleeping outside, in hallways, in cars and anywhere that provides some sort of shelter from the elements.

We are in desperate need of things to keep folks warm. Today alone we had tried to place 5 people into shelter and 1 into detox and all the beds are full. This is a crisis.

- Sleeping bags
- Tents
- Hand and feet warmers
- Gloves
- Silver emergency survival blankets
- Blankets

Drop off or we can pick up from you on the North Shore.

A few suggestions, things to do if you see folks sleeping outside or in a car!
- Don't call the cops
- Don't harass them or enter their area without consent.
- Ask them if they are ok.
- Ask if they are know about local resources.
- Just say hello.
- Call your local outreach program and let them know and they can go check on folks.

Some more overdose stuff. Talking about some white powder issues! There have been a lot of overdoses in which folks think they are purchasing co***ne and it turns out to be fentanyl.

PLEASE share with your friends that are co***ne users, they are at extremely high risk for overdose death from this kind of mix up. Especially if they are not an opioid user.

Test strips. Test strips. Test strips. We got 'em! So do a lot of other places so if you need them come get them.

Anyone using substances is WELCOME at our syringe service program even if you do NOT inject your drugs. You can access test strips, Naloxone, treatment, HIV/HEPC/STI testing and information.

Stay safe.💋

Overdose prevention is a lot of things. One of which is making sure PEOPLE WHO ARE USING DRUGS have access to Naloxone (Narcan) when they are using. Access for us means in hand, on deck ready to go!

Teaching about substance use safety doesn't create addiction, it enables people using or trying substances to stay alive.

But what else is overdose prevention/education? There is so much more! Here are a bunch of things you can teach folks you love to prevent overdose and overdose death.

1. Try not to use alone, if you do there is a free number to call that will stay on the phone with you and call emergency services if you become unresponsive. Never Use Alone - 800-972-0590
2. Check your pills and powders with fentanyl test strips. You can get them for free from your local drug user health program.
3. If someone you know tells you they are going somewhere to use, ask where and ask if you can check on them after a certain amount of time.
4. Teach folks about periods of abstinence and tolerance. If you are someone who uses opioids every so often or off and on it will be easier for you to overdose.
5. Remind people that lack of water, food and sleep can have an effect on their overdose risk.
6. Know how to access care if someone asks, inpatient care, methadone, suboxone etc,. KEEP THOSE LISTS UP TO DATE! Wrong numbers and info about programs helps no one. Those bed count lists you see are not always accurate so always call!
7. Getting into detox right now in Massachusetts is very difficult, send people to drug user health programs if they are using substances and unable to access care. Many programs offer help with access and transportation.
8. What about switching HOW you use? Some ways of use are slightly less risky than others. Not just for overdose but disease transmission as well.
9. Teach people the truth about their drugs. What they are, how they work in the body, what happens if combined with other substances and how to minimize risk.
10. Make sure you and people around you KNOW how to respond to an overdose. Not just opioids but stimulants and alcohol too.
11. Let people know you love them, we are so tired of losing people.

Feel like you need some more info or training?
Reach out to your local harm reduction program. :)

"Methadone Mile"...if we could please stop it with that. When we discuss this area of Boston please remember we are talking about PEOPLE. What we are looking at is human lives. Our systems have failed to evolve fast enough to meet the needs of the people in our communities.

Although it may seem a simple task to "just go to treatment" or "just get a job" or "just rent a room" are we all on the same page about what it ACTUALLY takes to "just do" these things? I think when you are removed from the world of helping folks get treatment, housing, health insurance, mental health care the assumptions pour out about how easy it is.

One little sentence that may help put some things into perspective. I recently went to access mental health services for someone...there is a 900 person waitlist.
