I am genuinely disgusted by some of the comments being made about Dr. Ashok Muralidaran. Criticizing a medical outcome is one thing. Making racist remarks and attacking someone because of their ethnicity is completely unacceptable.
Our family knows tragedy. Our son, Peirce, ultimately died as a result of errors made by another hospital and another surgeon. Yet despite everything we have been through, we would still recommend Dr. Muralidaran without hesitation.
When another surgeon failed to properly address a critical issue with Peirce’s heart, he required emergent surgery. Dr. Muralidaran stepped in and repaired the damage, saving our son’s life and giving us more precious time with him. That is the doctor we know.
People seem eager to define an entire career by one tragic outcome. The reality is that pediatric heart surgery is one of the most difficult and high-risk specialties in medicine. These surgeons operate on the sickest and most fragile patients imaginable. Even when everything is done correctly, there are no guarantees. Sometimes, despite extraordinary skill, effort, and care, a child still dies.
If mistakes were made, the family deserves answers, accountability, and fair compensation. No one should argue against that. But there is a difference between seeking accountability and publicly destroying a person’s reputation while making racist comments about them.
Dr. Muralidaran has spent his career helping children and families facing unimaginable circumstances. He has performed thousands of surgeries and cared for countless patients. The fact that people are reducing a lifetime of work and sacrifice to a single alleged error is heartbreaking.
As parents who lost a child, we understand grief, anger, and the need for answers. But we also understand that medicine is practiced by human beings. Human error exists in every profession, and in pediatric heart surgery the stakes are unimaginably high. The outcome of these surgeries can be death, even when everyone involved is doing everything possible to prevent it.
You can support a grieving family. You can demand accountability. But racism, hatred, and character assassination help no one.
Our family will always be grateful to Dr. Muralidaran for the role he played in saving Peirce’s life. He gave us time we otherwise would not have had, and that is something we will never forget.
