Is your loved one on a DNR?

The letters DNR can sound frightening, but they mean something very specific.

A DNR means CPR will not be started if a person’s heart stops or they stop breathing. It does not mean “do not care.” Pain medication, symptom management, oxygen for comfort, nursing visits, mouth care, and emotional support can all continue.

A DNR protects a person’s wishes while allowing care to remain focused on comfort and dignity. Make sure the people involved know where the document is kept and who to call when the time comes. Requirements can vary by state, so ask your hospice team which form is needed and where it should be displayed. 🩷
