What if your anxiety isn't the problem?
What if it's actually evidence that your nervous system has been working incredibly hard to protect you?
Many of the patterns we struggle with, such as anxiety, hypervigilance, perfectionism, emotional numbness, people pleasing, or shutting down, are not signs that something is wrong with us. They were developed as intelligent adaptations that helped us survive during events that overwhelmed our capacities.
The challenge is that survival strategies don't always know when the danger has passed. They continue operating until the nervous system has new experiences that teach it something different.
This is why I don't believe healing begins by asking, "What's wrong with me?"
It begins by asking, "How did my nervous system adapt, and what does it need now?"
You are not broken.
Your body has been doing its very best to protect you.
The beautiful news is that the nervous system is capable of change. With practice, support, and the right conditions, we can build capacity, experience greater regulation, and begin responding to life from the present rather than from old survival patterns.
That is the work we'll be practicing together beginning September 8 in Somatic Skills for Anxiety and Mental Wellness: Cultivating Embodied Consciousness.
I would love to have you join us.
Warmth, Amy
P.S. If you’re interested in working with me 1:1, I occasionally have openings in my Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy Program. Link in the chat as well.
