Did you know your resting body posture can influence jaw pain? The good news is that practicing good ergonomics can reduce unnecessary strain and make it easier for your body to heal.

Here are a few tips for improving jaw health right at home:

• Focus on good posture: Sit up straight, both feet flat on the floor, shoulders down and relaxed.
• Keep your head stacked on your shoulders: every inch forward drastically increases the amount of unnecessary weight your neck has to support.
• Sleeping: Avoid sleeping on your stomach. Try sleeping on your side or back with your head in line with your spine.
• Pay attention to how you hold your jaw: Think "lips together, teeth apart" for your resting jaw posture.

Each of these steps helps maintain good posture and may reduce tension in your jaw, neck, and shoulders.

Muscle pain and joint pain aren’t the same, and in orofacial pain patients, that difference matters.

• Muscle pain: deep, aching, tender to touch, often along the side of the cheek.
• Joint pain: sharp, stabbing, often right in front of the ear.

They can show up together and even make each other worse.

But the wrong treatment could be expensive and leave you frustrated.

For example, Botox, an effective treatment for jaw muscle pain, would be unlikely to help a patient who only suffers from painful joint inflammation.

Likewise, a steroid injection into the jaw joint would not relieve sore and tender muscles.

The key? Don’t guess. Get a proper diagnosis. An Orofacial Pain Specialist can pinpoint the source of your discomfort and create the right treatment plan for you.

A clicking jaw doesn't automatically mean arthritis.

Jaw clicking is more common than most people think. In fact, 1 in 3 people has a click jaw joint. But a click doesn't mean you have a damaged joint, and it doesn't necessarily mean your jaw will get worse.

However, if your jaw click is accompanied by:
• A restricted range of motion
• Stiffness or pain
• Changes in your bite

It's time to consider seeing an orofacial pain specialist for a thorough examination and diagnosis.

On the other hand, if you only experience clicking and it isn't bothersome, you may not need to actively treat it.

A specialist can work with you to determine if your symptoms are concerning and how they should be treated.

When a recent patient came to us, they were in the midst of an emergency; their jaw was locked. This made it impossible for the patient to participate in daily activities and left them feeling understandably scared. Dr. Guthrie was able to see them and complete an exam the very same day. Though this was an urgent situation and we wanted the patient to experience relief as soon as possible, this case, like any other, required a careful and detailed examination.

After a thorough exam, Dr. Guthrie was able to treat and resolve this patient's locked jaw that day. The patient left feeling relieved, with their jaw functioning normally again.

We often share how much we love helping patients find relief from chronic facial pain, but we’re equally grateful for the opportunity to step in when an unexpected, urgent issue arises. Even in time-sensitive situations like this, you can trust that you’ll receive the same level of attentive, high-quality care you deserve.

Stories like these are a reminder of why we opened Midwest Jaw Relief.

If you experience lock jaw or other face pain, please reach out. We would love to help you find relief.

We recently returned from the American Academy of Orofacial Pain's 50th annual Scientific Meeting.

The event marked and celebrated five decades of orofacial pain research and advancement of the field. We learned a great deal during the conference and built new connections with colleagues. This experience helps us continue providing quality care to our patients.

Some of our favorite moments from our trip were:
• Being present to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the conference
• Dr. Guthrie's mentor, Dr. Isabel Moreno, was inducted as president
• Attending lectures on systemic causes of chronic pain as well as new joint therapy techniques
• Being in Orlando, Florida, where we were able to spend time at Disney with our daughter

We've returned to the office feeling energized and all the more motivated to provide our patients with quality care. We look forward to serving you with all of your chronic facial pain and sleep needs.

Yesterday we were filled with gratitude celebrating Mother's Day, a holiday that holds a tender spot in our hearts as we know first hand the grief and longing that can surround it. We waited years for our miracle daughter and continue to hope for another miracle to come our way.

In many ways our struggle with fertility has guided the care we now give our patients. Dr. Guthrie and I have experienced first hand what it feels like to have "nothing work" and to lose hope. But we also experienced the positive impact and change one good care team had on our lives. It only took one excellent doctor to bring back our hope.

We now strive to bring that same level of care, empathy, and expertise to our patients as we navigate through their struggles with chronic pain. I pray our office continues to be a place that not only brings relief, but also hope.

Happy Mother's Day.
-Savannah Guthrie
