Another state goes smoke free! Let’s be next, Wisconsin!

Congratulations to Michigan on going surgical smoke-free.

On Thursday, July 23, 2026, Michigan Governor Whitmer signed HB 4779 into law, making Michigan the 22nd state to enact legislation to protect operating room staff and patients from surgical smoke. The new law goes into effect one year from the date of signing and requires facilities that provide surgical procedures using heat-related equipment likely to generate surgical smoke to develop and implement a policy requiring the use of a smoke evacuation system.

Thank you to the advocates in Michigan who pushed for this important legislation and congratulations again.
