It's possible to earn more and still feel like you're not moving forward.

You picked up an extra shift. You started seeing a few more patients. The number on your paycheck went up. And yet somehow, your financial picture looks about the same as it did a year ago.

More income only becomes progress when it's attached to a plan, debt payoff, savings, or a specific goal you're working toward.

Without that, extra income just becomes extra spending, or extra stress. It fills whatever gap is already there instead of building something new.

Where is your next dollar actually supposed to go?

Let’s be honest about something.

A high income and financial progress are not the same thing.
You can be earning a strong Psych NP salary and still feel like you’re not actually getting ahead.
Because more money coming in doesn’t automatically mean more wealth being built.
Sometimes the extra income gets absorbed by lifestyle changes, expenses, debt, or simply the cost of everything going up.
And there’s no shame in that.
The important thing is knowing what’s actually happening with your money.
Because financial progress isn’t just about how much you earn.

It’s about what your income is helping you create:
→ Less debt
→ More savings
→ An emergency fund
→ Investments
→ More financial breathing room
→ And ultimately, more choices
So before asking, “How can I make more money?”
Try asking:
“Where is my money actually going?”
You don’t need to judge yourself. You just need to get clear.

If you’re earning well but still don’t feel like you’re getting ahead, I created a Financially Free NP Starter Guide to help you start looking at your money with more clarity and intention.

Comment “GUIDE” or DM me “GUIDE” and I’ll send it to you.

And if you’re not ready for the guide yet, start with one thing:
Look at the number you’ve been avoiding.

Thank you, Teresa, for giving me the opportunity to share my heart on this topic.

We talk a lot about burnout in nursing, but we don’t talk nearly enough about the role our finances can play in it.

So many nurses are looking for the next side hustle, extra shift, or additional stream of income. But sometimes, more income isn’t the real answer. The deeper issue may be a lack of financial clarity, financial wisdom, and a plan for the money we’re already earning.

Financial well-being matters. Because when we begin to get our finances in order, we create more choices around how much we work, where we work, and ultimately how we want to live.

Teresa, thank you again for creating the space for this conversation and allowing me to share a message that means so much to me.

Psych NPs, the highest-paying side hustle will not help much if the income does not have a plan.

We can work more, earn more, and still feel financially stuck when we have not decided what the additional money is supposed to change.

Is the income for debt?

Emergency savings?

Investing?

Funding a business?

Creating enough flexibility to reduce clinical hours?

Before choosing the side hustle, decide what assignment the income will have.

What would you need additional income to accomplish first?

Psych NPs, earning more does not always have to mean seeing more patients.

Picking up another clinical shift, accepting more telehealth appointments, or adding weekend coverage may be the fastest way to generate additional income. But it can also mean more documentation, more emotional responsibility, and even less control over our time.

Our expertise can be used in other ways. Teaching, writing, speaking, consulting, precepting, creating professional resources, and developing educational programs are all ways we can create value without automatically adding another patient panel.

The question is not whether clinical work is a good or bad side hustle. The better question is:

**Do I want to see more patients, or do I want another way to use my expertise?**

I explore this in today’s new article:

Your Side Hustle Does Not Have to Involve More Patients

I am also putting the finishing touches on Start Your Psych NP Side Hustle, a new course designed to help Psych NPs choose the right opportunity and build it with a clear purpose and plan.

What is one way you could use your Psych NP experience outside of direct patient care?
