At BLOOM, we incorporate mental and emotional development into every one of our in-place interactions with infants and their families, so we are glad to see this reflected in AAP's new clinical report, "Framework for Approaching Healthy Mental and Emotional Development in Pediatrics.”

Supporting these foundations from the very first months of life matters deeply to us, and it's meaningful to see it recognized as the standard every child deserves. 💜🍼

AAP’s new clinical report, “Framework for Approaching Healthy Mental and Emotional Development in Pediatrics,” observes that more children are experiencing mental and emotional health concerns and specialized resources are often difficult to access.

In the report, the AAP recommends incorporating mental and emotional development into every pediatric visit, not just during times of concern. This can be accomplished through anticipatory guidance, surveillance, screening and brief interventions, and done in ways that are trauma-informed, equitable and free of bias. The report also highlights the value of collaboration with integrated health providers, schools and communities.

Most sleep-related infant deaths are preventable🍼😴

For Day 5 of our Safe Sleep Awareness campaign, we’re sharing some vital guidelines from the NIH (National Institutes of Health) "Safe to Sleep" program. It’s more than just "Back to Sleep"— it’s about creating a "bubble of safety" around your baby. 💜

3 Things the NIH Wants You to Know:

🍼 Breastfeeding Matters: Evidence from the NIH shows that feeding only human milk for the first 6 months provides the greatest protection against SIDS.

🍼 Skip the Gadgets: The NIH advises against using wedges, positioners, and heart monitors that claim to "prevent" SIDS. They aren't recommended and can actually be dangerous.

🍼 Stop Swaddling Early: According to safety standards, once your baby starts trying to roll over (usually around 3 months), it’s time to stop swaddling for their safety.

Take just a minute to scroll through the images below to update yourself and your village on these NIH-backed ways to keep our infants safe.

Check back at our past posts this week for more Safe Sleep tips and reminders.

Let's keep our "blooms" safe! 🌸

Vacation mode? 🏖️ Don’t leave infant safety behind!

Whether it's a hotel, a relative's home, or a vacation rental, the ABC’s of safe sleep still apply: Alone, on their Back, in a Crib (or a portable play yard).😴

Take 15 seconds to reassure yourself and your village that your infant is sleeping safe in any and all environments away from home. Provided by the Indiana Department of Health.

✅Safe sleep on the go can be tricky, but it’s just as vital as it is at home.
🏠 At Home: Standard Crib/Bassinet.
🏨 Away: Use a portable play yard or travel crib that meets CPSC safety standards.

❌ The "Don'ts" of Travel Sleep:
Don't use the adult bed (even for a nap!).
Don't use "travel nests" or "docks" inside a crib.
Don't use a sofa or armchair for feeding if you’re exhausted.

BLOOM Tip: If you’re traveling, always use the firm, flat mattress designed specifically for your travel crib, and ensure the sheet is tight-fitting. Never use pillows or adult blankets to "cushion" a travel crib.🍼

Let’s keep our babies safe, no matter where they roam! 💜

Some good news: infant mortality is decreasing.
However, sleep-related infant deaths are rising. No need to feel helpless - take just 2 minutes to refresh your knowledge with these Safe Sleep tips from Department of Health.

Even better: support anyone caring for an infant by sharing these reminders. Let them know you trust they are smart and capable - you’re simply offering support for them and their village. Encourage them to pass this along, too.

The more we’re reminded, the more soundly - and safely - we can all sleep.

Room-sharing reduces the risk of SUID for four main reasons:
(1) caregivers can respond more quickly,
(2) babies sleep more lightly and wake more easily,
(3) it supports safer sleep habits like more frequent feeding and reduces time in unsafe sleep spaces like recliners, and
(4) it avoids the risks of bed-sharing.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends room sharing (without bed-sharing) for at least the first 6 months, ideally up to 1 year.

Infants in BLOOM wants everyone to rest easy knowing babies are sleeping safe.

Sharing Safety Intervention Tips Saves Infant Lives 🍼

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. At Infants in BLOOM we know that exhaustion and isolation are the "root causes" of many sleep-related deaths and moments of parental desperation.😴

Set yourself, your infant, and your village up for Safe Sleep Success with these tips:
💤 The "Shift" System: Both caregivers don’t need to stay up. Trade 4-hour "protected sleep blocks" with a partner or friend so at least one of you is always mentally alert.
💤 The "Sofa-Proof" Rule: If you feel your eyes getting heavy, put the baby in the crib immediately. Never feed a baby on a sofa or armchair if you are tired - these are the most dangerous surfaces for a "nod-off."
💤 Build your "Village Map": Identify your "Emergency 3"—three people you can text at 3:00 AM (or 3:00 PM) when you are at your breaking point. Asking for a reset is a safety measure, not a failure.
💤 The "Safe Pause": If the crying won’t stop and you’re overwhelmed, it is 100% okay to put the baby in their empty crib and walk out for 5–10 minutes to breathe. A crying baby in a crib is safe; an overwhelmed parent is a risk.
💤 Know the "Red Flags": If you feel resentment or hopelessness, call your doctor or the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline (1-833-TLC-MAMA). *Save this number in your phone now.
💤 Preparation over Perfection: Set up the crib/bassinet before you are tired. Make the "path of least resistance" the safest one.

The Truth: When we support families, we prevent abuse AND save babies’ lives.💜

Share this with your village and anyone who cares for an infant not because they do not know but because they could use reminding - and that’s SUPPORT. 🌸
