Should you mow perennial clovers? Some of the big name guys say you don’t need to and some of them say you do. What do they never talk about? Deer density and carrying capacity! It’s site specific like most things in deer management. This is a two acre field and if 30 - 40 deer were using it every night it would probably never need mowing because the deer would be your mower. As it is, this is a well managed property with a high carrying capacity so deer can’t keep up with the amount of forage produced. Based on my years of growing up on a dairy farm it will be clipped at some point to maximize forage production throughout the summer. If you have attended some of my most recent seminars we show fields like this that are clipped at the proper time compared to not clipped at all. Next up biennials.

This hardwood bottom was thinned two years ago. All the junk trees like sweet gum, ash and hackberry were removed. It was burned last year at a proper time. After canopies increase we will go back in a few years and remove any oaks competing with each other and end up with a desired basal area. So a dense hardwood bottom now excellent deer habitat. We want every acre of a property doing something positive.

People love to see big bucks standing at a feeder, but my clients who get it want to see this. After several years they now know what they can produce without them standing at a feeder all summer. They also get to keep all that money in their pocket.

Another one who no longer has to supplemental feed during the summer.

Riding the South Alabama Kubota and Rental LLC RTV through a property with my wife is one of my favorite things to do. I’m a lucky man because it’s one of her favorite things too.

Just an old man and an old Kubota finishing up summer mix planting. We might be old, but we still get it done.

He might end up being a good one. Exactly where you want them this time of year. No supplemental feeding.
