5 ways to regulate your nervous system with play:

Swing - the rhythmic motion activates your vestibular system, which helps calm anxiety.
Blow bubbles - the slow, extended exhale is a built-in breathing exercise.
Dance it out - movement without choreography lets your body release tension without overthinking it.
Build something - blocks, sand, a blanket fort. Hands-on, low-stakes focus quiets a racing mind.
Play outside - combining movement with nature amplifies the regulating effect.

Ask a Rec Therapist: what's included in the price of a Re-Tx Yourself retreat?

That coverage starts with a pre-retreat 1:1 assessment looking at anxiety and depression markers, strengths, body awareness, and background, so we can build goals specific to you. Then it's evidence-based recreational therapy programming, all materials, a swag bag, a private room, chef-prepared meals, and the recreational therapist's time throughout. It closes with a post-retreat 1:1 assessment to revisit your goals and talk through anything that came up.

Think of it as a mental health vacation: programming, free time, and genuinely being taken care of the whole way through. Got a question for the series? Drop it below.

One of the people who has most inspired Re-Tx Yourself is my husband, Walter.

Walter loves nature. Not just being outside when the weather is perfect or when there’s a beautiful view, but since Ibhave known Walter, nature has always been a part of who he is and how he moves through the world.

It’s actually where our story started in 2007, we met at Camp Batawagama, teaching kids to love and experience the outdoors. And in so many ways, nature has been woven through our relationship ever since. We’ve backpacked, hiked mountains, scuba dived, explored new places, gotten dirty, gotten exhausted, and experienced some pretty incredible adventures together. We’ve seen both the highs and lows that come with being out in nature, and we keep going back.

But what inspires me most is watching the way Walter naturally turns to nature. When he needs space, when he needs to think, when he needs to process something, or even when he simply needs to feel like himself again, he goes outside. There’s no big production around it. He just seems to understand that sometimes you need fresh air, movement, trees, water, or an adventure to help you find your way back to yourself.

Walter is also one of the calmest and most rational humans I know. Watching someone with that steadiness still recognize that he needs nature has been such an important reminder for me that taking that space isn’t something we have to earn. We all need places where we can slow down, reconnect, and just be.

And throughout every version of my own journey, Walter has believed in me. He has encouraged the ideas, the adventures, the pivots, and eventually this slightly crazy idea I had to build a business around helping people reconnect with themselves through nature.

So when I think about who inspired Re-Tx Yourself, Walter is absolutely part of that story. He inspires me through his love of the outdoors, through the way he continues to pull us toward adventure, and through his unwavering belief in what I am creating.

In so many ways, his belief in nature, and his belief in me, helped me create Re-Tx Yourself too.

When you move without a goal, a scoreboard, or a "should," your nervous system gets a break it doesn't get almost anywhere else in adult life. It's one of the reasons play shows up as an actual clinical tool in recreational therapy, not just a nice-to-have. What's one way you could let yourself move today without a goal attached?

For a long time, I thought ā€œgo outside, it’ll helpā€ was just something people said. It’s not a platitude, it’s physiology. Time in nature actually shifts your nervous system out of fight-or-flight and into rest. I wish I’d understood that sooner, both for myself and for the people I work with.

Another person who gave me inspiration for Re-Tx Yourself is my sister.

Before Re-Tx Yourself, before recreational therapy, before I ever thought about the science behind why nature makes us feel the way it does, she was my very first playmate.

Growing up, when we were told to "go play outside," she was my buddy. We spent hours making believe in the woods, running through fields, creating our own adventures. Laughing, exploring, simply being kids. Looking back now, I realize how much of my own connection to nature began in those moments with her.

What inspires me even more is that she never really left that behind.

As an adult, nature is still a place where she takes space for herself. She walks out into the fields with her horses, spends time outside, and simply is present. I've watched her keep choosing the outdoors as a place to slow down, reconnect, and step away from the intensity of everyday life.

Then she became a mom, and I got to watch her bring so much of what we experienced as kids into her own family. She still goes on walks in nature with her kids, time away from screens and stress.
