(Sister Company to Samatva Wellness) Rooting Wisdom is a collaboration between myself and families to honor the natural process of birth and heal from the medical interventions you may have undergone. A newborn’s natural instinct to root and a caregivers intuitive wisdom both create a symbiotic relationship like none other.

My name is Kelly and I’m a patient advocate focusing on helping families navigate their perinatal path. I have been working in a high risk hospital with a level 3 NICU for over 5 years as a Lactation Consultant. I began working in the birth industry after practicing yoga and certifying in Los Angeles. I became a childbirth educator through Lamaze after I was certified as a birth doula. These two experiences brought me to the lactation field where I learned the special gift that is parent/baby connection.

It is heartbreaking—and very real—what can occur during the postpartum period. Postpartum psychosis does not require a prior mental health diagnosis. It does not always follow a clear genetic predisposition. And it does not necessarily arrive with obvious or alarming warning signs.

More often, it emerges quietly: through internal experiences of confusion, shame, fear, or conflicting thoughts that can become hidden within the overwhelming realities of new parenthood. These experiences are often misunderstood, minimized, or lost amid the expectations and demands of the postpartum transition.

Awareness matters because postpartum psychosis can affect families who never imagined they were at risk. Recognizing the complexity and subtlety of these experiences is an important step toward reducing stigma and ensuring timely support and care.

Bonding is at the core of raising our children AND ourselves. Parenthood does not mean making easy choices but facing our unique history that often bares baggage we have tried to long forget. It smacks us in the face and we must create healthy boundaries so we can have a positive experience with our newborn. Kudos to all woman making the most difficult decision to breastfeed and to not, they’re equally stressful.

When got pregnant, it had been after many years of feeling disconnected from her body, for a number of reasons. After diagnosing and treating stage 4 endometriosis, she had been looking forward to a stretch of her life where her body felt like her own again—until pregnancy derailed that.

Once she had Scottie, her daughter with , Hewitt had to decide how she would feed her baby. She weighed her mental health, her recovery, and the kind of mother she wanted to be. In the end, she decided against breastfeeding. “My thought process was layered,” she writes for ELLE. “The most important thing to me was doing what is best for my baby. I will always do what is best for her.”

Now a few months into motherhood, Hewitt opens up about the contradictions, complex guilt, and learning to accept support in a culture that quietly equates suffering with devotion. Read her essay at the link in comments.
