Nobody talks about what a whole summer of pool days actually does to your child's skin and I think it is time we did.
We all know chlorine kills bacteria in the pool. That is the whole point of it. But here is the part most people miss.
Chlorine does not stop working when your child climbs out of the water.
Your child's skin has its own microbiome, a living ecosystem of beneficial bacteria that acts as a protective barrier. It helps regulate inflammation, supports immune function, and keeps the skin healthy. And chlorine, because it is a broad spectrum disinfectant, disrupts that ecosystem every single time your child swims.
For kids who swim daily all summer, that is a lot of repeated disruption to a system that is still developing.
This is also why pool kids often deal with dry itchy skin, mystery rashes, and that persistent chlorine smell that no regular shampoo seems to fix. The chemical is still on the skin doing its job long after they towel off.
Here is what we do in our house every single pool day:
We use Rowe Casa Swim Spray before getting in and again immediately after. The key ingredient is sodium ascorbate, a form of vitamin C, that actually neutralizes chlorine and converts it into a harmless compound that rinses right off.
Such a small thing. Protecting something most of us did not even know needed protecting.
