BrightStart Check Facebook in case we need to cancel. Building Healthy Families seeks to foster health in the families by building the capacity of parents.

BrightStart Play Academy is our weekly program with fun play & learning activities for children with a parent circle, where parents can relax and enjoy conversation around a variety of topics. BrightStart for Families is for families with young children (pre-natal through age 4). The adult component is designed to enhance the skills of parents and other care-givers by encouraging an optimal home e

nvironment to improve their baby's success in life. BrightStart emphasizes how parents can stimulate brain development. Parents and caregivers are the single most important part of an infant's world. Parents with knowledge and skills can equip their young children to enter school ready to learn and thrive. There are several key elements to the workshop. We will discuss creating a home with opportunities for a child to grow with good nutrition, a sense of security and safety, ready to learn and develop his or her full potential. An important part of BrightStart is to equip parents as reading partners with their children.

Getting your child to listen is not about shouting. Research shows children are 31% more cooperative when adults speak from eye level. Kneeling or sitting signals respect, safety, and connection, which makes them more receptive to guidance.

Eye-level communication reduces intimidation. A towering adult can trigger fear, making children focus on the anger instead of the message. Being at their height demonstrates that you see and value them, helping the nervous system remain calm and attentive.

It also improves understanding. Kids can clearly see your facial expressions, mouth movements, and gestures, which enhances comprehension and learning. Your words and nonverbal cues work together, reinforcing the message without stress.

Yelling backfires. It triggers fear and anxiety, shuts down attention, and can harm the parent-child relationship. Children may start to fear your voice and feel unsafe, reducing cooperation and emotional connection.

By lowering yourself to their level, you build trust, show empathy, and model attentive listening. This simple shift strengthens bonds, makes communication smoother, and encourages natural cooperation. Calm presence and connection always outperform volume.

Many parents worry that giving too much love or attention to a child will spoil them, especially in the first years of life. Neuroscience shows this is a myth. Before age 3, children are not capable of being spoiled by affection. Instead, they are learning about the safety and reliability of their world.

During these early years, a child’s brain is forming critical connections that guide emotional regulation, trust, and social development. Responsive care such as meeting cries, comforting, talking, and playing teaches children that the world is predictable, nurturing, and safe. These experiences lay the foundation for confidence, empathy, and resilience later in life.

When caregivers respond consistently, children develop secure attachment. They learn that emotions are acknowledged, needs are met, and help is available. This sense of safety is far more important than limiting attention or affection. Children who feel secure are more willing to explore, learn, and form healthy relationships.

Every hug, soothing word, and moment of connection strengthens the brain. Giving love and attention during these critical years is not spoiling. It is the most important investment in a child’s long-term emotional and cognitive health.
