“Would you ever step over your partner in training, or your opponent at the end of a match?” he asked me, knowing I had a background in wresting. I said I wouldn’t, because it would be disrespectful. “Well in weightlifting, the bar is your partner… sometimes even your opponent,” Epsteyn said. “You should always show it respect.”

For those of you that don't know, our two coaches proudly call the United States Military Academy at West Point our Alma Mater. This wonderful post from the Army West Point Athletics page shows how much further our nation's pastime and our premier leadership institution are forever joined together in history.

(For those of you that don't know, the New York Yankees used to play at and against West Point during the offseason.)

We hope Pope Francis heard our prayer of lifting heavy and being awesome. What a blessing to have him here!

A spontaneous video Javi decided to make regarding training and the mentality one should have when embarking on a new training cycle. The road to getting better is a JOURNEY, not a SPRINT. Be patient and consistent in your lifts as you continue to adapt; PERFECT practice makes perfect. Your training program is designed to get you to your end state goal, NOT immediate gratification. Going after 90-100%+ lifts on a daily basis will a) cause more misses and frustration, and b) result in injury later on down the road. In my humble opinion, most lifters don't have the discipline to engage in a heavy-single, Bulgarian-style program because instead of listening to their body, they keep the "I hit 100 kg before, so I should be somewhere close to that, not this 80 kg that feels like the weight of the world, so let me continue to try to go closer to 100 instead of being snappy and consistent at 80." I'm a strong advocate of training smart. I'm in no way downplaying the Bulgarian approach; it is a proven system, but for the majority of people, this is not the right approach. Instead, a methodical, progressive approach - coupled with the watchful eye of a quality coach - will see you to your desired goals. Good luck, train smart, stay tight, aggressive, and keep pushing!

Almost getting caught up with the move - so many moving pieces! Easy does it ... Stay tuned for our new location.

With the physical part of the move complete, we got the chance to work with one of our longtime friends that was having some issues with his lifts. Today, we targeted his sn**ch. Here's a 10-lb PR after just a small session and technical corrections. Nice work, Brian! There's some more work to do, but you're well on your way. Next stop: the clean and jerk. Thanks to CrossFit Englewood for letting us stop in today.

The big move back home is currently in place - stay tuned for our new location!

Changes

http://olympusbarbell.com/2015/06/07/changes

Changes - whether they are expected or not - can sometimes feel as much a part of life as breathing.  Within the next month, we will be moving away from Manhattan, Kansas (a place we've called home...

Grace hits another PR. Great way to send her off as she starts her DPT program in Kansas City! She had a really tough miss at 80 following this attempt, worked up to a routine 94-kg clean and jerk, and had another narrow miss at would be a PR at 97 with no break in between the sn**ch and clean and jerk due to time constraint. I'm confident that she could've hit it and more with a little rest between the two lifts. I'm expecting big weights for her at her next meet.

Before we started this (and every) cycle, we laid out goals for her to hit across the sn**ch, clean and jerk, and squats. She's met or exceeded each one throughout every cycle. Goals give you a clear objective, but be sure to be realistic. She's a fantastic lifter, a dedicated warrior, and we'll surely miss her.

Grace keeps kicking ass. Here's a **ch from this Saturday.

Congratulations to one of our lifters, Grace, for hitting a PR 100-kg clean. Welcome to the triple-digit club 👍🏼.
