Another Saturday…another Birthday celebration! Did you know that we will set up an entire party based on the theme you want?! Minions is not one of our normal themes, but we couldn’t let the birthday child down!

Sometimes the best classroom is outside, where there's room to spread out, experiment, make discoveries, and fully immerse ourselves in the experience.

What began as an invitation to explore quickly became an investigation filled with bubbling reactions, changing colors, dinosaurs, and plenty of questions.

But what we love most about these experiences is watching how the learning unfolds.

Children begin by exploring the materials, discovering their properties and imagining what might happen.

Then comes testing. Adding water, mixing substances, observing reactions, changing quantities, and trying something different to see what happens next.

As the experience progresses, they're making connections, developing hypotheses, solving problems, and building on what they've discovered.

And finally, cleaning up. Gathering materials, rinsing tools, washing trays, and caring for the environment they've used. This isn't something separate from the learning. It's an important part of the process, fostering independence, responsibility, coordination, and respect for shared spaces.

At MHK Play Studio, we believe meaningful learning takes time. Time to explore an idea, revisit it, change direction, and follow curiosity wherever it leads.

And on beautiful days, sometimes that means taking the entire experience outside, embracing the splashes, and letting the investigation unfold.

Because the process matters just as much as the discovery.

A table full of friends, a little birthday magic, and a whole lot of memories! šŸ§œā€ā™€ļøšŸ«§šŸ’œ

Our Splish Splash Mermaid celebration brought together all the things we love about birthdays at MHK Play Studio: time to play, friendships to celebrate, and special moments shared around the table.

From the ocean-inspired decorations to the sweetest mermaid treats, this Pioneer Party was full of under-the-sea fun!

Because birthdays aren’t just about the decorations and cupcakes. They’re about celebrating childhood, building friendships, and creating memories together. šŸ’•

Have a celebration coming up? We’d love to help bring your little one’s birthday vision to life!

A little crunch. A little sweet. A whole lot of fall. šŸŽšŸ‚

New at Sip + Snack: Apple Nachos!

Sliced apples loaded with caramel drizzle, whipped cream, granola, and fun chocolate sprinkles. The perfect snack for refueling between all that playing, creating, and exploring.

Because fall treats don’t have to come in pumpkin spice. šŸ˜‰

Stop in and give them a try during your next visit to MHK Play Studio!

I created MHK Play Studio because I wanted it to be more than a place to play. I wanted to create a space where families felt connected, where relationships were built, and where community could grow.

And somehow, it still catches me off guard when that same community shows up for me.

These months can be hard. When the weather is beautiful, everyone understandably wants to be outside, and things at the Studio get a little quieter. Owning a small business comes with seasons, and some feel heavier than others.

Then, because apparently Tuttle wanted to add a little excitement, we discovered a crack in the bottom of her tank. All of her water drained out, and our girl had to move into a temporary tank that was much smaller than what she needed. 🐢

One of our community members heard what happened and decided she was going to help. She went on the hunt for a replacement tank, found one, and today showed up for us with it.

Needless to say, there were tears.

Not really because of a turtle tank.

Because in a season when things have felt a little heavy, someone saw a need and quietly decided, I can help with that.

I spend so much time thinking about how MHK Play Studio can show up for children and families. How we can create meaningful experiences, foster relationships, and be a place where people feel like they belong.

Today was one of those reminders that community goes both ways.

Sometimes you create a place for people to belong, and somewhere along the way, they become the people who remind you that you belong there, too.

Thank you for showing up for us. And Tuttle is VERY happy to have her home back. 🐢

A little summer camp reunion, with autographs included.

Our summer campers came back together to pick up their very own copy of the book they created this summer and, of course, sign each other’s pages!

Watching their eyes light up as they found their own page and illustrations was pretty special. Then came reading their friends’ pages, swapping signatures, remembering their adventures, and finding a little time to play together again.

This summer, our book captured one of the experiences that became such an important part of camp: our weekly visits to Prairiewood.

And there was definitely a theme when campers wrote about their favorite things…

šŸ’¦ Exploring the creek
🐸 Catching tadpoles
🐟 Finding minnows
🌿 And simply having the freedom to explore nature week after week

What started as weekly adventures became stories. Their stories became illustrations. And now those memories live together in a book created by the children who experienced them.

A pretty wonderful way to put a bookmark in Summer Camp 2026.

Learning doesn’t have to happen all at once. šŸ¦‹

As monarch migration moves through our area, the butterflies have become part of the landscape at MHK Play Studio, from the monarchs arriving in our pollinator garden to the materials waiting to be explored in our atelier.

And we have time.

Time to notice the first monarch.
Time to look closely at its wings.
Time to wonder where it is going.
Time to revisit those ideas through drawing, building, books, conversation, and play.

This might look like slowing down to carefully observe a monarch and adding those details to a drawing.

Next week, it might look completely different.

That’s the beauty of learning alongside the seasons. An experience doesn’t have to begin and end in one afternoon. Children can return to an idea over days, weeks, and even months, adding new observations and changing their thinking as the world around them changes too.

The monarchs will eventually continue their journey south, but the questions and discoveries they leave behind can keep unfolding long after they’re gone.

The monarchs are beginning to arrive. šŸ¦‹

It’s monarch migration season, and we’re starting to spot some of our first visitors in the pollinator garden at MHK Play Studio.

As the world outside changes, so does our atelier.

We’ve added a monarch butterfly provocation, inviting children to look closer, wonder, create, and make connections between what they are seeing outside and the materials available to them inside.

Rather than telling children what to create, the materials become an invitation. What do you notice? What do you wonder? How might you represent what you see?

Thoughtfully selected pieces from Guidecraft, Yellow Door, and Qtoys help extend those real-world experiences through open-ended play and creative expression.

This is why our environment is always evolving. Children’s interests, the changing seasons, and the world right outside our doors continually give us new places to begin.

We’ll be watching the garden for more orange and black wings in the coming weeks…and watching to see where the children take the inspiration.

Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can give children is space to play.

Space to turn an ordinary material into something entirely new. To invite another child into an idea. To negotiate what happens next. To try something that feels a little challenging. To change direction halfway through. To decide, ā€œI can do this,ā€ or ā€œI’m not ready yet.ā€

These moments may look simple from the outside, but so much is happening within them.

Children are creating, communicating, problem-solving, building relationships, testing ideas, learning about themselves, and discovering how to navigate the world around them.

And as adults, we don’t always have to lead the play. Sometimes our role is to create the environment, offer thoughtful materials, stay close, and trust children with the time and freedom to see where their ideas take them.

That’s the kind of play we believe childhood needs more of.

Come see where their play takes them at MHK Play Studio.
