Háŋ Mitákuye Oyás'iŋ,
Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day to my relatives. We are still here.
And to the ones already warming up their fingers to type "Happy Columbus Day" in my comments, I see you. Every year. Like clockwork. So let's talk.
Columbus never set foot in North America. Not once. He landed in the Caribbean, thought he was in India, and never figured out he was wrong. The man was lost and somehow you still want to give him a holiday.
What he did do was enslave the Taíno people, the ones who welcomed him and fed him. His cruelty was so bad that Spain, SPAIN, in 1500, arrested him and shipped him home in chains. When the people funding your colonizing say you went too far, that should tell you something.
That's who you're defending. Sit with that.
Minnesota replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day in 2023. South Dakota, where I'm from, has called it Native Americans' Day since 1990. So no, this isn't new, and no, we aren't "erasing history." We're finally telling all of it.
And since some of you love history so much, here's some local history. Our store sits just blocks from where 38 Dakota men were hanged on December 26, 1862, right here in Mankato. The largest mass ex*****on in United States history. Ordered by Lincoln. Most people in this town drive past that spot every day and never learn it in school. I opened my business on this land on purpose, as a Lakota Winyan. That's what reclamation looks like.
Our ancestors survived disease, massacres, boarding schools, stolen land, stolen children, and laws that made our ceremonies illegal. They prayed in secret so we could pray out loud. They hid our languages, our plants, our songs, and carried them through so we would have them today. Every salve I make, every plant story I share, every word of Lakota my girls learn, exists because somebody refused to let it die.
So today isn't about tearing anybody down. It's about the truth. And the truth is, we are still here. Our ways are still here. Our plant relatives are still here.
Now, about the comments. If you came here to say something racist, go ahead. I'll leave it up so everyone can see exactly who you are. That's your history now too.
Wóphila Tȟáŋka to everyone who shows up for us, learns the real history, and teaches it to their kids. You're the reason it's changing.
