Minnesota ATs WE DID IT!!

The Minnesota Athletic Training Practice Act takes effect TODAY August 1, 2026! This achievement reflects years of steady advocacy, professional leadership and a shared commitment to ensuring Minnesota law accurately reflects the education, preparation and real-world practice of athletic trainers across our state.

This legislation modernizes the Minnesota Athletic Trainers Act of 1993 to better align with current professional standards and patient care. The bill defines athletic training in statute and updates the delineation of athletic training to reflect the full scope of services athletic trainers are educated and credentialed to provide, including risk reduction, wellness and health literacy, assessment, evaluation and diagnosis, critical incident management, therapeutic intervention, and health care administration and professional responsibility. It also updates outdated terminology by replacing “athlete” with “patient,” recognizing that athletic trainers care for physically active patients across the lifespan in schools, clinics, hospitals, physician practices and many other settings.

This success belongs to many people, including those whose leadership laid the groundwork long before this moment. Their efforts built the strong foundation that made this achievement possible.

Most of all, thank you to the members of MATA who shared your stories, met with legislators and continued to advocate for the profession and the patients we serve. This new law is more than a statutory update. It is a recognition of who athletic trainers are today and the value we bring to health care in Minnesota. Today we should all take pride in this moment and the momentum it creates for the future of athletic training in our state.
