I hear this from so many new families!

I know these sweet little ones are so deliciously adorable, and it is SO hard not to kiss them. ❤️ But for a newborn, one seemingly “harmless kiss” can potentially lead to a serious illness, or even hospitalization.

You can spread some viruses before you ever realize you’re sick. Just because you feel perfectly well does not mean you can’t pass something along.

And something that may seem simple to an adult—like a cold sore (HSV)—can be very serious in a newborn. A sick newborn may need hospitalization and an extensive evaluation, sometimes including bloodwork, cultures, and a lumbar puncture, while we rule out dangerous infections.

So when new parents say:

“Please don’t kiss our baby.”

They aren’t being mean.
They aren’t being dramatic.
They aren’t being overprotective.

They’re protecting a brand-new immune system that simply isn’t ready to handle infections the way ours can.

Love that sweet baby. Hold them if Mom and Dad are comfortable with it. Admire those adorable cheeks.
