Too many people don’t get the support they deserve because their therapists don’t know what to look for. Autism and ADHD look very different in adults than in children, and adult presentations are challenging to detect by the “untrained eye.”

A generalist will rely on their limited understanding of the DSM criteria or outdated research that was based on white cisgender boys from upper and middle-class families. That’s why high-masking AuDHD folks get missed.

A lot of adults receive an anxiety or depression diagnosis that explains only a small piece of their experience and completely misses the bigger picture. By the time someone questions whether they’re autistic or ADHD, they’ve usually read way more about these unique presentations than their therapist has.

Getting brushed off says more about that provider’s training than about you. If that happens, don’t be afraid of a second opinion. Our entire team is neurodivergent, so we get this because we live it. You deserve someone who knows what adult autism and ADHD look like.

Stimming, short for self-stimulatory behavior, refers to the repetitive movements, sounds, or sensory inputs that help regulate your nervous system.

It serves a natural function. Stimming can support focus, emotional expression, and nervous system regulation. While frequently associated with autism, many ADHDers and neurotypical people stim in various ways.

Many neurodivergent adults engage in these behaviors when feeling safe and suppress them in unsupportive environments. Long-term suppression increases stress and contributes to burnout.

Identifying supportive sensory inputs allows these behaviors to function as intentional regulation tools.

Self-understanding includes learning how your nervous system processes sensory input and identifying what helps you stay regulated and grounded.
