CURIOUS about Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)? Here are some of the top questions I receive!
1. Q: What exactly is SMP?
A: SMP is a form of tattooing that replicates the look of hair follicles by implanting pigment into the upper part of the dermis using tiny micro needles. SMP is done over the course of 3 sessions, each being about a week apart. I've preformed SMP on men and women both ranging from a little thinning to major hair loss to scar camouflaging.
2. Q: Will SMP damage my hair or stop hair from growing?
A: Not at all! Pigment is only placed into the second layer of your skin. This will have absolutely zero effect on hair growth.
3. Q: Will SMP look fake?
A: When done properly, SMP is seamless. Microneedles are made to match the exact same size as a follicle to keep the follicles looking realistic. A perfect blend + consistency along with an age appropriate hairline will make your SMP undetectable.
4. Q: How will you match the color?
A: Our SMP pigments are formulated to fit different skin tones. Colors can be diluted, darkened and mixed to create the perfect shade. They also contain natural warmers to keep the SMP from turning blue over time.
5. Q: How long does SMP last?
A: Typically SMP last about 6 years before a touch up session. The life of your SMP depends on how well you take care of it. Avoiding the sun and allowing it to heal properly is key to the longevity of your SMP.
6. Q: Can I leave my hair long?
A: Depends. If you are recreating the hairline the best thing to do is to buzz the sides and create the look of a cropped haircut. Leaving the hair long when you don't have enough hair will look like flat dots and very unnatural. If the hair is long enough, we can just do a density fill to create the look of thicker hair and camouflaged the thinning. I like to tell people, "its like using scalp darkening powders only permanent and natural looking"!
7. Q: Does it hurt?
A: Some people experience a little discomfort but overall the pain is minimal. I will numb you using a topical, this helps take the edge off of it. Honestly, when I had my SMP done I felt it kind of relaxing!
8. Q: What is the healing process like?
A: The healing process is actually quite easy! The main thing to remember is to avoid sweating for 4 days following each session. If sweating occurs before the skin has time to properly heal the pigment will push out. If you have a physical job that causes you too sweat a lot I would recommend scheduling your sessions on Fridays (assuming you have weekends off).
9. Q. How much experience do you have?
A. I have been practicing Scalp Micropigmentation for 2 years now. I've been the hair industry for 13. Spending so long behind the chair has helped me so much on my SMP journey. I know what a hairline is supposed to looks like, I know what an age appropriate hairline looks like. I know what a proper fade is supposed to look like and I've developed a good understanding of the skin and how it reacts. Being able to recognize all of those things has helped me be able to replicate seamless SMP.
10. Q: What does SMP cost?
A: The cost of SMP depends totally on the amount of work needing done. Density fills start at $500, Full top is $1,199 and full head is $1,500.
