It’s bee swarming season here in the Sierra — turn your sound up!
Two colonies have moved through the property in the last two weeks. They’re hard to miss. A low, collective hum — thousands of wings, one sound — fills the air as the colony travels.
Curious about “hive mind” behavior, I learned a swarm moves when the colony has outgrown its home. They rest clustered together on tree limbs protecting the queen. Scout bees fan out, evaluate new sites, then return and communicate through vibration — frequencies felt body to body through the cluster. The swarm doesn’t move until enough scouts agree. Just incredible, right?!
We watched them huddle into two of our oak trees overnight then leave the next day.
I don’t know where they ended up, but given how alive the garden has been lately, I think they’re close! 🐝
