Wellness is not for sale.
Recently, a friend was admiring the various plant tinctures and teas that we grow, harvest, process, and consume. She suggested we sell them or endorse similar products at the studio. She credited the tinctures and teas, in part, for our seemingly good health. She's not wrong; they do make me feel healthier. But I can't just consume a bottle of something and expect to be healthy. What makes those tinctures and teas healthy for me is the process. It's taking the time to get to know a plant. It's spending time outside with those plants, absorbing infrared rays from the sun. Processing the leaves slowly and steadily is a kind of meditation practice. All of these steps along the way are what contributes to health. Not just consuming the product at the end.
Amidst the current culture of expecting instant gratification, we have been forgetting about the value of participation, process, and patience. Too much convenience is harming us. We are designed to use our bodies, use our brains, spend lots of time outside, get plenty of rest, and stay connected to people and place. Taking short-cuts past these steps to try to collect on the prize at the end just isn't working very well for us. Rates of chronic disease are higher than ever. There really is no pill or gadget that can magically make us well. Pills and devices may assist, but ultimately, we simply must show up and do the work.
