🅿️ 🚧 Parking Lot Update

We’re halfway through the work of resurfacing our parking lots! The west (or “out”) side of our main lot will be closed today and tomorrow (June 17-18) for the pouring/curing/painting. The other half, nearest the store, will remain accessible. The small lot on the east side of our building is also being redone today and will be closed.

We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience!

Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈

Look for our staff at Upper Peninsula Rainbow Pride fest tomorrow - we’ll be handing out free bandanas, while supplies last! Archie did such a good job modeling them we couldn’t choose just one. Enjoy!

See that seagull in East Channel Brewing Company's logo? If you assumed it simply part of a generic scenic ode to life on Lake Superior, you’re wrong. He’s very important here.

That’s Itchee — a rescued gull that lived in a clawfoot bathtub in Joe DesJardins’ aunt and uncle’s back yard in Munising. He liked to eat potato chips and acted more like a pet dog than a transient wild bird, said Joe, and was so beloved he became part of the local lore and a mascot of sorts for brewery (and officially recognized in Itchee’s Washtub, LLC).

The seagull became part of the DesJardins family by flying into their sphere, and it’s a similarly true for anyone that visits the Munising brewery. They’re instantly welcomed in and part of the crew.

“We’re approachable and fun,” said Joe. “We are all family here, having a good time and really enjoying what we do.” ...

NEW: local, woman & Indigenous owned beaded earrings available at the Co-op! 🫐🍓

Pamela Valdez, owner of SkodenSisters, is a citizen or M’chigeeng First Nation. She has been a beadwork artist for over 30 years and attributes her artistic growth from her time at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Sant Fe, New Mexico. Pamela identifies as an Indigenous food warrior advocating for the story of Anishnaabe language and food within the community of Gitchi-Namebini Ziibing (Marquette).

We’re so happy to have Pamela’s art available at the Co-op and to have her as part of our team at the MFC (she also works on our Outreach team as our Community Services Coordinator)!

One question she’s been asked that she thought important to address: Is it cultural appropriation to wear Indigenous earrings if I’m a settler?

“It is not cultural appropriation to wear Indigenous earrings if you are a settler, it is actually a form of cultural appreciation! As my earrings are not regalia, they are for everyone to wear and enjoy. Miigwetch (Thank you) for supporting indigenous art.” -Pamela

Stay tuned for a full feature on Pamela and SkodenSisters in July, as she’ll be our Local Vendor Spotlight!

🅿️ 🚧 A whole LOT of work happening here, both in and out (pun intended).

Our main parking lot is being resurfaced! Half of the lot, the “in” side, nearest the building, will be closed for a few days this week (Wednesday-Thursday, for the labor + 48 hours of curing time). The other half of the lot will remain open, with traffic going both in and out through the “out” driveway.

The work will be done on the other side of the lot next week.

Remember there is street parking and the lot on the east side of the building is open to customers if you wish to avoid the work zone entirely. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience!

Pardon our dust... store reset in progress!

Starting this week, you’ll notice some movement happening in the store. To improve the flow and make it easier for shoppers to find certain items, we’ll be moving most refrigerated items from Aisle 6 (between Produce and Bulk) to Aisle 10. Beer and wine (now in Aisle 10) will be relocated to that open space in Aisle 6, near our other canned and bottled drink options.

This will be a multi-day project, though we’re unsure exactly how long it will take — so please bear with us! While we expect this to be minimal, please be aware that some items may be briefly unavailable during the move. We’ll plan to post updates on our social media channels if you’d like to follow along with the progress, and don’t hesitate to ask staff for help locating products. We’ll have signage throughout the store advising customers where products have moved as well.

While it may seem frustrating at first to have such
a dramatic layout change, our hope is that once everyone has adjusted, it will make shopping easier. Right now, we have cheese and alternative cheese products in THREE different places. After this move, they’ll be all together in one area.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we make these improvements!
