Please help us give a warm welcome to the newest addition to the Outside the Box Functional Medicine team: Karly Baisden, PA-C! 🎉✨

Karly is a board-certified Physician Associate who has been caring for patients with complex medical conditions since 2013, including serving as a front-line provider during the pandemic in Infectious Diseases. Why Functional Medicine?
In 2024, after navigating personal health struggles and health issues with her own child, Karly realized conventional medicine didn't have the answers she needed. Experiencing the root-cause approach firsthand transformed her life and sparked a passion for understanding how immune, metabolic, and hormonal health all connect. 🌿

Beyond her PA credentials, Karly brings extensive training in Lifestyle Medicine and nutrition, and is a Certified Sleep, Stress, and Recovery Coach!

Outside the clinic, you’ll find her spending time in nature, walking with her husband of 15 years, their two kids, and dog Reesie, reading, gardening, and hosting friends and family. 🏡☀️

We are thrilled to bring her investigative mind, compassionate heart, and wealth of knowledge to our practice! Drop a welcome message for Karly in the comments below! 👇

"Just try to relax." If you've been dealing with chronic stress, fatigue, or burnout, you know it’s not that simple. 🌊

In functional medicine, we look at stress not as a character flaw, but as a biological cascade. When your nervous system stays stuck in "fight-or-flight," your adrenal glands continuously pump out cortisol and adrenaline. Over time, high stress doesn't just affect your mood—it directly impacts:

🤢 Gut Health: Slows digestion, alters your microbiome, and contributes to "leaky gut."

💤 Sleep Quality: Keeps you "wired and tired" at night.

🔥 Systemic Inflammation: Drives joint pain, skin breakouts, and brain fog.

⚖️ Hormone Balance: Disrupts thyroid function, progesterone, and insulin sensitivity.

How we address stress from the root up:
1️⃣ Test Cortisol Rhythms: Advanced lab testing (like a saliva/urine DUTCH test) maps your cortisol curve throughout the day so we can targetedly support your adrenals.

2️⃣ Nourish the Nervous System: Adaptogenic herbs, magnesium, and essential amino acids help calm an overactive stress response.

3️⃣ Support the Vagus Nerve: Simple daily practices—like deep belly breathing, cold exposure, or listening to the rhythm of ocean waves—activate the parasympathetic ("rest and digest") branch of your nervous system.

Your body isn't broken; it's responding to the demands placed on it. Let's work together to give it the support it needs. 💙

Insulin resistance happens when your cells stop responding to insulin, trapping your body in fat-storage mode and causing constant fatigue. The good news? It’s completely reversible when you address the root cause. Here are 4 tips to get you on the right path:

1. Plate with Purpose: Prioritize protein and fiber first to blunt blood sugar spikes.

2. Move After Meals: A 10-minute walk after eating uses muscle to absorb glucose without extra insulin.

3. Manage Sleep & Stress: High cortisol and poor sleep lower insulin sensitivity overnight.

4. Test Fasting Insulin: Standard blood sugar tests miss early warning signs—test fasting insulin to see the full picture.

Bottom line: You don't have to wait for blood sugar issues to take control of your metabolic health.

Which spud is actually better for you: sweet potatoes or regular potatoes? 🥔🍠

In the wellness world, sweet potatoes have held "superfood" status for years, while white potatoes got labeled as empty carbs. But from a functional medicine perspective? They’re both nutritional powerhouses—just in very different ways.

Here is how they actually stack up:

🧡 Sweet Potatoes (Morning Glory Family):

Packed with beta-carotene (Vitamin A) for gut mucosa lining, skin health, and immunity.

Rich in soluble fiber, which supports smooth digestion and steady blood sugar response.

🥔 White Potatoes (Nightshade Family):

Richer in potassium than sweet potatoes (even more than a banana!).

Higher in resistant starch when cooked and cooled (like in a potato salad), which feeds your beneficial gut bacteria and produces short-chain fatty acids.

Unless you have a specific sensitivity to nightshades, you don't need to eliminate white potatoes to eat a nutrient-dense diet. Food diversity is key to a healthy microbiome!

✨ Pro Tip: Cook your white or sweet potatoes, let them cool in the fridge, and reheat them before eating. This simple trick increases the resistant starch content, lowering the glycemic impact and giving your gut extra love!

Think creatine is just for gym bros? Think again, ladies. 👑🧠⚡

For women, creatine is one of the most researched, powerful, and underrated tools for brain health, hormone balance, energy, and graceful aging.

Here is why women especially benefit from creatine:

🧠 Banish Brain Fog & Boost Clarity: Women experience distinct fluctuations in brain creatine levels due to hormonal shifts (especially during luteal phases, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause). Creatine supports cognitive stamina, memory, and focus.

🔋 Mitochondrial Energy: If you’re fighting daily fatigue, creatine helps recycle ATP (cellular energy) so you can feel energized down to the cellular level.

💪 Preserve Lean Muscle & Bone Health: Muscle tissue is essential for metabolic health, insulin sensitivity, and longevity. Creatine helps women maintain lean muscle mass and bone density without adding unwanted bulk.

✨ Mood & Stress Support: Studies show creatine can support mood stability, particularly during times of hormonal stress or burnout.

The Myth: "It will make me bulky or bloated."

The Truth: Creatine draws water inside your muscle cells (intracellular hydration), which promotes cellular repair and firm muscle tone—not subcutaneous bloat or bulk.

It’s time to rethink women's nutrition from the ground up. 🌿

Have you tried adding creatine to your routine? Stop by the clinic to pick yours up!

You’re eating clean, sipping your bone broth, load up on fiber, and taking your probiotics—yet within 30 minutes of eating, you look 6 months pregnant. What gives?

It might not be what you're eating, but where the food is meeting your gut bacteria.

Welcome to SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth).

Here’s the deal: Most of your gut bacteria belong in your large intestine (colon). But when the normal motility of your digestive tract slows down or gets disrupted, that bacteria can migrate upward into the small intestine.

When healthy, fibrous foods reach these trapped bacteria, they ferment it way too early—producing gases (hydrogen, methane, or hydrogen sulfide) that lead to:
❌ Extreme upper belly bloating & pressure
❌ Painful gas & cramping
❌ Alternating diarrhea, constipation, or both
❌ Brain fog and post-meal fatigue

At OBX, we don't just guess or throw broad-spectrum antibiotics at the problem. We use non-invasive breath testing to pinpoint exact gas levels—and then we investigate why the gut motility slowed down in the first place (stress, low stomach acid, past food poisoning, or thyroid issues!).

Ready to eat without the bloat? Let’s look outside the box together. 💡

If you’ve ever been told that core weakness, pelvic heaviness, bladder leaks, or discomfort during intimate moments are "just part of getting older" or "normal after having kids"... we’re here to shift the perspective.

Common doesn’t mean normal.

In functional medicine, we don't just look at the pelvic floor in isolation. Your pelvic health is deeply connected to:

✨ Gut Health & Bloating (Increased intra-abdominal pressure impacts the pelvic floor)

✨ Hormonal Fluctuations (Estrogen changes affect tissue elasticity and muscle tone)

✨ Chronic Inflammation & Stress (Systemic tension holds tight in the pelvis)

✨ Postural Alignment & Movement (How your body moves directly affects how your muscles support you)

At OBX, we look at the big picture to help you get to the root cause of your symptoms so you can feel strong, comfortable, and confident in your body again.

07/21/2026

In functional medicine, we view the eyes as a direct extension of your central nervous system, gut, and metabolic health. Eye fatigue, chronic dryness, and light sensitivity aren't just isolated issues—they’re often early indicators of something deeper:

🔬 Cellular Energy: Your retina has one of the highest concentrations of mitochondria in the body. Eye strain and brain fog often share the same root cause!

🩸 Blood Sugar: Delicate retinal micro-vessels are super sensitive to glucose spikes and insulin resistance.

🦠 The Gut-Eye Axis: Systemic inflammation and gut dysbiosis directly degrade tear film quality, leading to chronic dry eye.

Here are 3 daily steps you can take to help your eyes:

1️⃣ Morning Sunlight: Get 5–10 minutes of natural outdoor light early to recharge retinal mitochondria and set your circadian clock.

2️⃣ Focus on Carotenoids: Eat dark leafy greens, egg yolks, and colorful veggies rich in Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Astaxanthin.

3️⃣ Boost Omega-3s: High-quality EPA/DHA helps stabilize the lipid layer of your tears to lock in moisture naturally.

True eye care starts from the inside out. 📦✨
